The Filtvelt system was home to at least one habitable world, Filtvelt III, and as of 3145 was the capital of the Periphery nation known as the Filtvelt Coalition.[3][4]

System Description

The Filtvelt system is located near the Marielund and Rennes systems[3][4] and consists of a class G5III primary orbited by at least three planets. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the system nadir jump point.[1][2]

System History

The Filtvelt system was colonized in the mid-twenty-fourth century.[1]

Filtvelt III - more commonly known simply as Filtvelt - is the third planet in the system and has two moons named Færder and Torbjørnskjær. During its history Filtvelt has served as the administrative capital of the Outer March region of the Federated Suns and as the capital of the Filtvelt Coalition; Filtvelt has also been home to a major military academy and at least one notable military manufacturing concern.[1][2]

Planetary History

Early History

A naturally verdant world, Filtvelt was colonized in the mid-twenty-fourth century and swiftly grew to become a trade hub for a significantly sized local region of space, and developed a thriving industrial base.[1] The combination of a large percentage of the colonists having Nordic ancestry and the low natural gravity on Filtvelt led to the population of Filtvelt becoming generally tall and fair, despite a extensive French influences.[2]

Age of War

During the Age of War Filtvelt was the capital world of the Outer March region of the Federated Suns; the last Prince of the Outer March was Nuno Gutierrez, who ruled the March during the Davion Civil War and remained carefully neutral; when First Prince Alexander Davion successfully won the war and secured his hold on the throne once and for all, his first act in 2541 was to abolish the old March system, dissolving both the Outer and the Terran Marches and absorbing the worlds into the revamped Capellan March, Crucis March and Draconis March.[5]

Star League

In 2725, the 691st Jump Infantry Brigade, a part of the 123rd Jump Infantry Division, along with its attached company of Land-Air 'Mechs defeated a pirate company of BattleMechs on Filtvelt after authorities put out a call for help to the SLDF. Thus the 123rd Jump Infantry Division earned its nickname of "The Filtvelt Fusiliers".[36] The Federated Suns actively negotiated with the SLDF to construct a forward naval resupply base at Filtvelt, but the negotiations came to nothing because of the Amaris Coup.[1]

Succession Wars

Filtvelt went into a sharp decline during the Succession Wars, partly as a result of damaging pirate raids, but also due to the cannibalization of its industrial infrastructure to keep other worlds the Federated Suns considered more important operational. If not for Filtvelt's prodigious agricultural sector, producing huge quantities of food and livestock, Filtvelt would have dwindled into insignificance; as it was, Filtvelt continued to feed itself and a number of other worlds throughout the Succession Wars, with the Filtvelt thunderbeast being a particularly prized export.[1]

Jihad

On the 20th of February 3072, the Filtvelt Coalition declared its independence from the Federated Suns, with Filtvelt as the capital world of this new nation.[37][38] The Coalition Armory plant on Filtvelt began building RetroTech BattleMechs during the Jihad as the Coalition's only means of supply the Filtvelt Citizen's Militia with BattleMechs. RetroTech production continued after the Jihad until at least mid-3081.[39] The Coalition Armory facility was originally the Outback FarmMechs plant, which by the time of the Jihad was a dilapidated, rundown facility, but following the takeover of the IndustrialMech plant Coalition Armory were able to begin producing RetroTech[40]Dervish and Toro[2] BattleMechs remarkably quickly.[40]

Geography

Filtvelt has a single large continent named Hurum[2] with varying extremes of terrain and climate, a result of its vast size. Hurum's notable terrain features include the Orgona mountain ranges - the largest peak of which, Traktúra, reaches eleven thousand meters in heigt - and the northern rangelands, the native habitat of the Filtvelt thunderbeast.[1] Whilst Hurum is the major landmass on Filtvelt, there are also a number of large coastal islands, including Buskerud, Fyr and Olavtoppen.[2]

Planetary Locations

  • Filtvelt Military Academy: located in Undredal.[1]
  • Filtvelt University: located in Undredal.[1]
  • Olafberg: the location of the Cal-Boeing of Dorwinion plant. Olafberg is a part of the large urban center of Hurum.[40]
  • Sor-Jan: the location of the Coalition Armory Inc plant on Hurum.
  • Undredal: the planetary capital city, located on the west coast of Hurum; by the thirty-first century, Undredal was the only spaceport on Filtvelt and the largest blue water naval port.[1]
