The Fomalhaut system was the location of at least one inhabited world, Fomalhaut III, and as at 3145 was located in the Republic of the Sphere.[2][3]

System Description

The Fomalhaut system is located near the Caph and Saffel systems[2][3] and consists of a class an A3V primary orbited by four planets.[1]

System History

The Fomalhaut system was colonised at some point during or before the First Exodus from Terra and remained a member of the Terran Alliance after the Demarcation Declaration.[4]

Fomalhaut III

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Fomalhaut III - more commonly known simply as Fomalhaut - is a hospitable world with three moons named Cryos, Iolius and Scarlet. During the Star League era industrial-scale mining was conducted on Scarlet, and an ore-refining station was in orbit above Fomalhaut to process the output of the lunar mines.[1]

Planetary History

Early Years

Fomalhaut was one of the worlds that remained a part of the Terran Alliance following the Outer Reaches Rebellion and the Demarcation Declaration of 2242,[4] and became one of the worlds within the Alliance Core region of the Terran Hegemony following the rise to power of Director-General James McKenna.[5]

Fomalhaut's original colonists were attracted to the world because more than four-fifths of its surface is covered with water. These colonists, largely from the Hawaiian and Philippine Islands, were already familiar with living in large island chains and subtropical forest regions like those present on Fomalhaut. Realizing that heavy industry probably wouldn't do well on the world, the colonists instead established an economy based on tourism. Eventually Fomalhaut became one of the Terran Hegemony's most popular resort worlds, particularly for the idle rich. The presence of significant amounts of metals on Scarlet, an inner and volcanically active moon, led to the establishing of mining industries on the moon during the Star League era, as well as an orbital station to refine the ores.[1]

Amaris Civil War

As Fomalhaut lacked any significant heavy industry the planet escaped much of the damage commonly inflicted to worlds occupied by the Amaris Empire Armed Forces. The planet wasn't left untouched, however; both the orbital mining station and the spaceport of Otaku were destroyed during the conflict.[1]

Succession Wars

Fomalhaut was annexed by the Draconis Combine at some point between 2786 and 2791,[6] and Fomalhaut continued to serve as a resort world for both the Federated Suns and the Draconis Combine. Amazingly, both militaries ignored the world for the most part. The lack of heavy industry removed most of the reasons for raiding the world, but Fomalhaut did suffer some raids from forces looking for water.[1]

Jihad

Formalhaut was one of several worlds to be attacked by the Word of Blake between the 19th and 21st of June 3068, and as with their other conquests that month the Blakists used a combination of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons to complete their conquest.[7] Having been forcibly integrated into the Word of Blake Protectorate, Fomalhaut would remain an occupied world until freed by elements of the Combine thrust of Operation SCOUR. The resistance offered by the Blakists was so severe that additional reinforcements had to be drafted in to assist the Combine forces after several months of brutal combat in which both coalition and Blakist forces acted with a disregard for human life.[8] Reinforcements arrived in the form of the Genyosha, who finally drove the Blakist defenders off the planet, but the planetary capital was destroyed in the assault[9] and it wouldn't be until the 7th of April 3078 that the defenders would finally surrender to coalition forces.[10]

The Dark Age

During the Dark Age the planetary capital city, Lollanda, was rebuilt by the Republic of the Sphere.[1]

Geography

Fomalhaut has just two small continents, Lyria and Oanhu; Lyria lies in the equatorial zone, whilst Oanhu is in the southern hemisphere. There are also a few dozen islands that rise up from the planetary ocean, which the settlers named the Endless Seas. The combination of emerald seas, unusual three-moon nighscape and natural beauty make Fomalhaut a striking and attractive world.[1]

Planetary Locations

  • Lollanda: the planetary capital city, located on Oanhu.[1]
  • Otaku: the planetary spaceport; destroyed during the Amaris Civil War.[1]
