Geography

Galtor III is an agricultural world on the border between the Federated Suns and the Draconis Combine.

Galtor has three main continents. Eire, the largest continent, has a spine of vast mountains and a broad fertile plain cut by numerous rivers. The Wagnall Plain, as it is known, is an immensely large area, well-watered and eminently suitable for cultivation. The other two continents consist mostly of desert or mountains, except for coastal flood plains and tropical jungles along the equator. Galtor's capital of New Derry is situated on Eire.

Planetary History

First Succession War

Galtor III was captured by the DCMS May of 2787 during the first wave of a surprise attack.[15] The massive invasion of the Federated Suns was so swift and targeted communications and JumpShips so effectively that many border systems didn't have a chance to transmit warnings or alerts, leading to widespread confusion on the part of the AFFS. This led to conflicting orders being issued, including orders for the mercenary unit Tyson's Troublemakers - formerly the SLDF Twenty-third Heavy Assault Regiment - to withdraw from Marduk, whilst the First Syrtis Hussars on Galtor III and the Thirty-eighth Avalon Hussars on Cussar were both ordered to hold firm.[52] The defending Hussars were trapped on the planet, and put up a resistance as long as 2792.[15]

Although the naval battle at Cholame fought in March and April 2790 had cost the AFFS a huge price, it bought the Federated Suns something badly needed - time. For fourteen months, the invasion forces from the Combine were unable to make significant gains, and the AFFS used that opportunity to provide whatever aid it could to those forces still fighting in systems such as Dobson, Galtor, Kentares IV and New Rhodes III.[53]

Third Succession War

The inhabitants of Galtor III were suffering under the strict draconian rule and hoped for liberation by the Federated Suns. However, they had to wait until 3022 when after over a century the Federated Suns finally reconquered the world in a bloody campaign in which more than one third of the population lost their lives.[24]

In 3025 Galtor III was the stage of one of the largest battles of the Third Succession War. The AFFS lured the DCMS into a trap and almost lost the world to them. Only the disunity of the invading forces and finally arriving Davion reinforcements prevented a Kurita victory.[54]

Fourth Succession War

During the early months of the Fourth Succession War Coordinator Takashi Kurita was focused on his conflict with the Wolf's Dragoons mercenary brigade, but following pleas for help from Chancellor Maximilian Liao the DCMS planned and launched additional offensives against perceived weak spots on the Federated Suns border. The Galtor Thumb region was one such weak spot, and Galtor III was invaded by the First Amphigean Light Assault Group. The planetary militia on Galtor III consisted of aging 'Mechs piloted by old pilots and a few regiments of conventional forces, which were swiftly defeated by the LAG. Despite the militia being easily beaten, an extensive guerrilla resistance campaign began on Galtor III that would continue to bog the DCMS forces on the planet, even though the Combine officially considered the planet to have been annexed in early January 3029.[29]

War of 3039

The planet was the symbol of a great loss of Combine honor against the Fox in the early 31st century and Hanse Davion knew how important it was to support the local resistance movement with material and men. Dozens of intelligence operatives and a 150-strong Special Forces team prepared the world for the coming liberation, and several months before the War of 3039 started the FedCom-backed insurgents attacked important Combine locations and personalities. The DCMS reacted with an increase of the local military presence, increasing the garrison force to five conventional regiments and placing the world under martial law. The resistance reduced their level of activity to lure the Dragon into a sense of false security by early 3039. That changed with the arrival of the Clifton's Rangers on 26 February, bringing in tow with them two regiments of "mercenary" mechanized infantry which had removed all evidence of their FedCom affiliation. The rebellion immediately struck every DCMS target, taking many high-ranking leaders prisoners and killing others, including Governor Hiroshi Tuu. The remaining DCMS forces, bereft of leadership, chose to engage in suicidal charges or hunkered down in their encampments. They were systematically destroyed over the next two weeks, and by the end of March the last holdouts had been wiped out and the planet secured.[55]

Jihad

The world wasn't affected by the Jihad, which allowed the population to rebound from the losses sustained in the early 31st century.[3]
