Description

The Goliath is the second 'Mech built by Brigadier Corporation. The Goliath is based on lessons that were learned from the Scorpion. The first and most important difference is that the Goliath weighs in at 80 tons allowing it to carry a much heavier weapons payload and armor at the cost of mobility. The Goliath is used as a general assault 'Mech and until recently was not usually seen in large numbers because of the bias against quad 'Mechs prior to the 3060s. In the late 3060s the Goliath saw renewed production and renewed popularity and has since become a powerful and respected assault 'Mech.

Weapons and Equipment

The Goliath is armed with what would be considered a paltry armament for a 'Mech of its size. The primary weapon is a Rand PPC. This is backed up by two Holly LRM-10 launchers. The Goliath has respectable firepower at long ranges. When an enemy closes though the 'Mech only has two Ramsey-65 Machine Guns to rely on for defense.

Variants

  • GOL-2H
The 2H is a Periphery upgrade of the 1H model. The 'Mech removes the Machine Guns from the chassis and adds in their place six Rocket Launcher 10s. This gives the Goliath a very powerful close range punch. BV (1.0) = 1,346, BV (2.0) = 1,583[5]
  • GOL-3L
This is a Capellan Confederation variant. A larger engine increases the top speed of the Goliath to approximately 86 km/h. Equipped with Stealth Armor and a Guardian ECM Suite for protection, the 'Mech carries an ER PPC and two MML-7s. Though the ammo in the side torso is protected by CASE, the ammo in the center torso isn't. [6] BV (2.0) = 1,826[7]
  • GOL-3M
The 3M is an upgrade of the Goliath that uses Star League technology. The 'Mech has had an XL Engine installed to reduce the engine's weight by half. The 'Mech retains the LRM launchers and Machine Guns of the 1H model. The 'Mech replaces the PPC with a Gauss Rifle which gives the Goliath devastating long-range firepower. The 'Mech still suffers from its close combat deficiencies but with its updated arsenal most 'Mechs are hard pressed to close to short range. BV (1.0) = 1,310, BV (2.0) = 1,537[8]
  • GOL-3S
One of the "new generation" of Goliaths, the 3S's engine has been upgraded to a Light Fusion Engine, and, as a result, it now carries thirteen and an half tons of armor. The entire arsenal has been stripped from the 'Mech and the 3S carries as its primary weapon an LB-X Autocannon/20. This is backed up by three ER Medium Lasers. For longer-range engagements, the Goliath carries an LRM-10 launcher with a Artemis IV fire control system as well as an ER Large Laser. BV (1.0) = 1,374, BV (2.0) = 1,828[9]
  • GOL-4S
The 4S Goliath is built using a Light Fusion engine to save weight. The saved weight is used to mount a new Heavy Gauss Rifle. The 4S also carries an LRM-10 launcher for long-range support and for closer ranges the 'Mech also carries two ER Medium Lasers. This arsenal makes the 4S extremely deadly at close ranges. BV (1.0) = 1,730, BV (2.0) = 1,912[10]
  • GOL-5D
The 5D uses some of the newest technology available to the Federated Suns. The 'Mech is built based on the rugged older 1H chassis and standard engine. The 'Mech carries as its primary weapon a Rotary Autocannon/5. This is backed up by four ER Medium Lasers and two Machine Guns. The lasers and autocannon are all linked to an advanced Targeting Computer which gives the Goliath deadly accuracy at long ranges. BV (1.0) = 1,668, BV (2.0) = 1,975[11]
  • GOL-5W
The 5W variant of the Goliath is armed with two Ceres Arms Crusher Plasma Rifles which not only inflict damage on their targets but heat as well. The 5W is also armed with three Medium Lasers for close combat. The 'Mech has a Guardian ECM Suite which is needed to properly use its sixteen and a half tons of Stealth Armor. Additionally, the 'Mech has a Small Cockpit that is cramped and makes the 'Mech harder to pilot but saves valuable weight. The 'Mech also has an Improved C3 computer, allowing it to share targeting telemetry with similarly equipped units.[12] BV (2.0) = 2,030[13]
  • GOL-6H
This variant uses a Light Engine to power a design that is similar to the 3M, but with added anti-infantry capabilities. The pair of Delta Dart LRM-10s are still present, along with a two-ton, CASE-protected ammunition bin. Also for use at long range is the Fusigon Strongtooth Heavy PPC that deals as much damage as the 3M's Gauss Rifle, albeit at reduced range. Up close, the 6H can call upon two Machine Gun Array-linked trios of SperryBrowning Light Machine Guns. This variant also has a B-Pod in each of its legs to protect against attacks from battle armor. BV (2.0) = 1,681[14]

Related BattleMechs

  • Sirocco - At the beginning of the renewed interest in quad BattleMech technology, Corean Enterprises decided to design a replacement for the aging Goliath. The result was the Sirocco assault BattleMech[17].

Notes

The (original) Goliath variants and artwork from 3025 were part of the Unseen 'Mech designs. The Goliath was Reseen in 3067 with new variants using revised artwork.[18]
