Planetary History

Clan Invasion Era

During the early 3050s a joint expedition involving a team made up from representatives of both Gronholt and the neighbouring world of Hoonar found extensive gem and mineral deposits on the southern of Hoonar's two continents. Initially, the governments of both planets responded very favourably, seeing the prospect of future wealth for both worlds; however, Duke Vellant Deedman, the ruler of Hoonar, subsequently refused to share any of the resources or proceeds with the government of Gronholt.[1]

Baroness Tsanma of Gronholt attempted to negotiate with Duke Deedman, and when that was unsuccesful, the Baroness called for arbitration by the Federated Commonwealth government. However, the government of the time was distracted by the Clan Invasion and the arbitration available was equally unsuccessful. Incensed, the Baroness resorted to hiring mercenaries and launched a planetary assault to take control of Hoonar. By 3055 the Baroness and her forces had seized control of southern Hoonar, but had failed to gain any ground on the nothern continent due to the resistance offered by the Hoonar Planetary Militia. As a result, the Baroness continued to recruit mercenaries for further attacks in 3055 while Duke Deedman of Hoonar made appeals to the Commonwealth government for assistance.[1] Gronholt was a poor world to begin with, and with the economy under increasing strain, popular support for Baroness Tsanma's campaign was rapidly waning as she attempted to launch her next major assaults, and units employed by the Baroness found themselves facing increasing problems obtaining spares, supplies and ammunition.[14]

The Jihad

One of seven worlds to form the breakaway state known as the Malagrotta Cooperative in 3073, Gronholt was assaulted by the Remagen CrMM on the 7th of March 3076. The Remagen CrMM broke the two companies of pirates garrisoning Gronholt - a mix of Death's Consorts and miscellaneous smaller pirate bands - and forced the few survivors to retreat to the nearby world of Great Gorge, reclaiming Gronholt for the Federated Suns.[10][11]

Geography

Hoonar is a dry, water-poor world of no particular note. A small world with just two major continents, the main distinguishing feature of Hoonar is the crystal-clear Great Divide River which seperates the northern and southern continents.[1]

Planetary History

Clan Invasion Era

Following the discovery of rich gem and mineral deposits on Hoonar by an expedition formed from representatives of both Hoonar and the neighbouring world of Gronholt, relations between the two worlds broke down sharply. With Duke Vellant Deedman, the planetary ruler of Hoonar, determined not to share the proceeds arising from the potential exploitation of these resources, Gronholt attacked Hoonar, with mercenary forces in the employ of Baroness Tsanma of Gronholt conquering and occupying the southern continent of Hoonar.[1]

Duke Deedman relied on the planetary militia for defense against the mercenaries hired by Baroness Tsanma,[1] and the militia successfully fought a defensive campaign, holding the northern continent. Hoonarian partisans on the southern continent continued to fight an insurgency against the Gronholt forces in 3055; while poorly equipped, the paristans caused a number of problems for the invaders. Deedman himself proved a competent strategist while fighting this defensive war, a contrast to the highly controlling nature of Baroness Tsanma when commanding her forces in the campaign on Hoonar.[14]
