In May 3029 the DCMS went on the offensive again; in addition to stepping up the tempo of conflict on a number of contested worlds, the DCMS launched fresh attacks. Groveld III is the third planet in the Groveld system.
Planetary History
Early History
In the 26th century, Groveld III was originally an Outworlds Alliance colony consisting of tiny mining camps dotted widely around the planet. Groveld III was targetted in the first wave of attacks on the Outworlds Alliance in 2581 by invading Star League forces intent on forcibly incorporating the Periphery states into the Star League following the mass rejection of the Pollux Proclamation by the major Periphery states. The Star League Defense Force unit given responsibility for capturing Groveld III was the Fifteenth Brigade of II Corps, under the command of Lieutenant General Nathan Sóbis.[10]
At the time of the invasion, the Outworlds Alliance garrison on the planet consisted of just two armored battalions - the First and Second Groveld Armored Battalions - and a regiment of militia. The Fifteenth Brigade made planetfall at the Viking Flats on the 24th of July, but the planetary defenders under the command of Planetary Defence Chairman Samuel Steading refused to engage the Star League forces in a straightforward battle; instead, the Alliance forces had been reorganised into two demi-regiments and dispersed around the planet to wage a guerilla war.[10]
The first three weeks of the campaign to capture Groveld III saw two indecisive engagements at company strength during the first week, followed in the second week by the ambush of a Star League BattleMech and armor company scouting on the St. Adrian Plains by the Second Groveld Armored Battalion. Although the Star League scout force was wiped out other than a couple of 'Mechs, the ambush gave away the position of the Second Groveld; forces from the Fifteenth Brigade destroyed the Second Groveld a week later at the Tabatt Scar, for the loss of a company of Star League armor and a BattleMech lance.[10]
With the Second Groveld destroyed, the defense of the planet fell to the First Groveld Armored Battalion and their supporting militia infantry, who had dispersed across various widely seperate locations intent on ambushing Star League forces. The First proceeded to do exactly that, in a series of more than twenty seperate engagements by the end of August 2581; every attack bled both sides of forces and manpower, but tied up SLDF troops. The First Groveld and the hundreds of infantry supporting them managed to tie up the Star League forces until the end of September, despite the disparity in strength and technology between the two forces.[10]
Groveld III would remain an occupied planet until the signing of the Treaty of Cerberus on 25 July 2585, which formally ceded Groveld and thirteen other worlds to the Draconis Combine as a part of the terms laid out within the Treaty.[11]
Fourth Succession War
During the early months of the Fourth Succession War Coordinator Takashi Kurita was focused on his conflict with the Wolf's Dragoons mercenary brigade, but following pleas for help from Chancellor Maximilian Liao the DCMS planned and launched additional offensives against perceived weak spots on the Federated Suns border. The various AFFS forces and planetary militias on the planets invaded fought fiercely, slowing the DCMS campaign, and in common with the other theaters of the War, a lull settled over the Combine-Suns border in early 3029.[51]
In May 3029 the DCMS went on the offensive again; in addition to stepping up the tempo of conflict on a number of contested worlds, the DCMS launched fresh attacks. One of the new targets for invasion was Groveld III, which was hit by the mercenary unit McGee's Cutthroats in May; the militia fought hard, but couldn't stop the Cutthroats from capturing the planet. After the planet fell, remnants of the militia formed a commando squad that managed to sneak into the Cutthroat's camp and assassinate the regiment's second-in-command.[25]
