Origin

Hammer Missiles were first seen in use on a Battlemech known as Ragnarok, and later, variants to other mechs, such as Thor(summoner). Hammer Missiles are of unknown origin and unknown weight, although it is implied that one a set of 10LRM would be about the same weight. It is unknown whether this is a Clan or Inner Sphere weapon, but it is possible it was developed by The Word of Blake.

Capability

This type of missile is capable of knocking a Mech over, such as a Gauss could, as well as blow entire limbs off of mechs. This missile however, is a "dumb-fire" class, incapable of tracking onto any targets. This missile also produces heat comparable to that of an inner sphere PPC.

in-game, Hammer missiles operated on a type of "charge" mechanic. one would hold down the fire button to begin charging, then release to fire. This did not increase the damage on the missile, however, instead it was charging a "timer" on the missiles fired, a minimum charge would cause the missiles to explode after only a second or two of flight time, while a full charge (there was no penalty for holding a max charge for an extended period of time) would cause the missiles to detonate after ten or so seconds. if the missile made contact with anything; enemy 'Mech, building, etc., it would stick to the target until detonation. If a Hammer Missile collided with a Ragnarok or Ymir's LosTech shield, it would hang in-place in mid-air until detonation.

'Mechs equipped with hammer missiles in MechAssault and MechAssault 2 included:

  • Kit Fox, it is worth noting if a Kit Fox was running forward while shooting a minimum-charge missile, it would take full damage from the shot due to how slow Hammer Missiles traveled.
  • Bowman (actually a Catapult variant), charging Hammer Missiles on a Bowman felt much akin to pulling back the drawstring of an actual Bow
  • Prometheus (actually an Atlas variant), due to the charging mechanic, an alpha from a Prometheus had to start with the hammer missiles.
  • Ymir (actually a Ragnarok varient), between it's PPCs (which used a more traditional charging mechanic in the MechAssault series) and the Word of Blake-Tech "Lava" Plasma Cannon; Hammer Missiles were just another powerful weapon on a strong 'mech.
