"Johnny Mace, 'Mech Ace" is a humorous short story by Edward N. Smith published on BattleCorps on 24 March 2010.
“ | Every successful mercenary needs three things: the right weapons, the right contract... and the right attitude. | ” |
Plot summary
The story features Johnny Mace, a MechWarrior and independent mercenary. The poorly-educated and poorly-mannered STG-3R Stinger pilot stumbles his way through a meeting with a sort of "temp agency" for independent mercenaries ("Leech Contractors and Negotiators") on Galatea, the Mercenary Star, and accepts a poorly paid (it is implied) six-month garrison contract with the planetary government of Here to defend against pirates.
