Description

One of the first ultralight BattleMechs ever built, the Junior was designed in the Federated Suns in the 25th century and remains in use with backwater garrisons, third-line units, and some mercenary units. It has been in and out of production for centuries; its original manufacturer sold out to Federated who then made arrangements with Corean Enterprises. As of ca. 3025 the Junior is built in a small factory on Quentin, with production hampered by raids from House Kurita.

Weapons and Equipment

The Junior remains among the best-armed 'Mechs in its weight class, sporting a reliable combination of one Sutel IX medium laser and two ChisComp 32 small lasers. Two tons of armor provide minimal protection.

Variants

None known.

Canonicity

The Junior was only ever described in StarDrive. Since this magazine is not currently counted among the canonical sources for BattleTech, the 'Mech itself is not currently considered canonical either.

Notes

  • The maximum ground speed given for this 'Mech is slightly higher than normal for its mass and engine rating (69.9 instead of 64.8 kph), but this has no impact on its game stats.
  • The Junior features a Shure-Shott CL-541/9 Targeting and Tracking system with advanced built-in redundancies and self-diagnostics, allowing the 'Mech to suffer only a +1 penalty instead of +2 to its to-hit numbers after suffering the first critical hit to its sensors. This system can only be used on 'Mechs with three or less weapons, however.
  • A quirk in the fusion override circuit causes a tendency in the Junior to shut down under water (requiring a shutdown avoidance roll depending on water depth each turn), though it can be restarted normally.
