The Kensai Kami is less of a traditional military academy than a type of graduate school for members of the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery. Inspired by the Star League's Gunslinger Program, the Kensai Kami pits the best MechWarriors of the DCMS against instructors and each other in order to push themselves to new heights of excellence. Originally the Kensai Kami was based on Aix-la-Chapelle, though eventually branch schools would open on Luthien and McAlister.[1][2] After the Jihad, there was consideration for opening another branch on Qandahar geared towards minority groups such as women and the Azami, though as of 3079 no decision had been made.[3]

Prior to the Fourth Succession War the graduating classes of the Combine's military academies were allowed to compete against each other through the Kensai Kami program, with Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy graduates more often than not taking top honors. During the war and in the conflicts which followed afterwards, the military decided the resources used by the program were more urgently needed at the front and ended the Kensai Kami. Kanrei Theodore Kurita would eventually restart the program on Bicester in 3048 to once again provide advanced training opportunities to the Dragon's warriors.[1] Each regiment is allowed to send only one warrior of sho-sa rank or higher to attend the Kensai Kami, though who they choose to send is entirely at their discretion. However, a warrior may only attend the Kensai Kami once during their entire career.[1][2]

The Kensai Kami is a three-month program run on a quarterly basis, with students taking part in a total of seventy-five training missions against instructors and other students. These missions range from a simple duel to base defense scenario to a search-and-destroy operation, but frequently they will be stacked against the students such as uneven odds or changing missions goals in mid-fight. Missions might last just a few hours or for several days, but the successful completion of each mission earns a student forty points. Students must accumulate at least 750 points in order to attend the graduation ceremony, though on average most earn 1,000-1,500; an Honors score is any higher than 2,000 points.[1][2]

Graduates of the Kensai Kami, even those who barely pass, can rightly consider themselves among the most elite warriors in the DCMS. They may a ribbon on their dress uniform and paint the red, black and gold bars of the program's flag on the backs of their 'Mechs.[1] Their families are also awarded the Kensai Kami Wreath as thanks for their efforts in producing such an elite warrior.[4] The top scorer in each class also receives a medal from their Warlord that they may wear on their dress uniform, an automatic promotion in rank, and the opportunity to join the Kensai Kami as an instructor (or, if from a disreputable regiment, transfer to a more honorable unit).[1][2]

The Kensai Kami remained in operation after the Jihad, though there was now a two-year waiting list for those wishing to attend.<ref name=FMDCMS>
