Tanner trained at the Outreach Mercenary Training Command (OMTC), joining the Wolf's Dragoons for a short time as a reconnaissance and tracking MechWarrior, before leaving on amicable terms to become a freelance mercenary undertaking similar role for various employers.

Kurt Tanner was known to have piloted a RVN-4R-L Raven BattleMech, nicknamed "Shadow."
