Planetary Geography

The planet is almost entirely covered by one enormous ocean with only small, scattered island chains.[1] Only a few islands are larger than 60 kilometers across. The waters of the equatorial regions produce powerful hurricanes with their sauna-like surface temperatures that can ground aircraft and spacecraft. [36]

Planetary History

Castle Rock was the capital island of the planet during the Star League.[37]

Lackland has a history of bankrupting those nobles who attempted to exploit the planet; attempts to export the abundant water proved too costly, while attempts to develop aquaculture industries failed when the various marine creatures farmed with the intent of being exported as food delicacies were devoured by previously unknown but definitely dangerous marine creatures that rose up from the depths of the ocean and devoured the breeding pens whole. This actually suited the local population, who preferred to continue to live a life dominated by living on the fish caught locally and basking in the sun.[1]

Towards the end of the Third Succession War Marquess Stanton Defire had begun new efforts to extract wealth from Lackland by constructing underwater habitats against underwater cliffs on the planet, with the intent of using these habitats to extract minerals and chemicals from the rock. The initial results had proven promising, although a number of the habitats had attracted attention from what the local referred to as "The Mothers of the Ocean", huge and potentially menacing marine creatures.[1]

By 3067, Defire's efforts had proven fruitless; despite the rich deposits of ore and minerals found on Lackland, the cost of constructing and maintaining the underwater habitats had proven to be far in excess of the potential profits made by selling the resources gathered. Efforts to build up a viable tourist industry also failed on multiple occasions. And yet, despite these various commercial failures and the almost total absence of any heavy or technology based industry and a poor education system, the locals continued to live what they considered an idyllic lifestyle. Lackland was too poor a target to tempt pirates and raiders, but it produced enough food to support the local population and a moderate level of exports.[2]

The Jihad

In 3071 the pirate band known as the Tortugan Phalanx made their first known appearance in the Inner Sphere when the landed on Lackland and proceeded to conduct a flawless raid. Each of the three major subunits within the Phalanx - dubbed mora - split off from the pirate landing zone and executed an attack against a specific target within the planetary capital before returning to their DropShips, allowing the Phalanx to escape before the planetary militia was able to respond. In retrospect, the attack on Lackland appeared very similar to a shakedown mission for the pirate band.[38]
