The Malthus Syndicate was a criminal organization which had existed as an informal power in Lyran Commonwealth most of their history.

Overview[edit]

History[edit]

Origins[edit]

The Syndicate was born from the House Malthus, which first settled on the planet Romulus in the 2100s. Not above criminal activity, they succeeded in shipping and mining enterprises, which enabled the family to enter politics. In the 2300s, during the Commonwealth Nine Archons Era, Archon Treasurer Brandon Malthus flagrantly abused his position to enrich even more his family. The Malthuses were already the greatest criminal cartel in the Tamar Pact by they time their company Malthus Gambling Unlimited settled on the mining planet of Dustball, where they used the local mineshafts emptied of mineral to create the New Monaco Pleasure Dome, turning the local economy into a tourism one. For centuries, the Malthus spread their corrupting influence throughout Lyran space, specially in the former Tamar Pact former worlds.[1]

Clan Invasion Era[edit]

The Operation Revival became a disaster for the Malthus, as most of their worlds where taken by Clan Jade Falcon. One of their most prestigious houses was the Malthus (Bloodname), wich founder had a distant connection with the House Malthus. For that, the Falcons purged any criminal Malthus they found, but not only failed to eradicate the Syndicate: their relocation of former syndicate members to the Free Guilds allowed the Malthus to establish connections with them, and with the Dark Caste, extending their criminal business through Clan space.[2]

Dark Age Era[edit]

During the Dark Age Era, the Syndicate remained active. On Odessa, one of their branches found a lifelong enemy on the planetary governor, Gardner Carlyle, which never managed to totally get rid of them.[3]

IlClan Era[edit]

The dawn of the IlClan Era proved to be a big boon for the Syndicate: not only the Falcon's disappearance get rid them of their constant annihilation threat, but the creation of The Hinterlands gave them the opportunity to openly seize control of Dustball, which joined the reborn Tamar Pact. The Malthus Confederation became one of the most extended powers into the chaotic area, making alliances with the Pact and the Vesper Marches, though they were hunted by the Clan Hells Horses and the Arc-Royal Liberty Coalition. In the first, they became a secret but important partner of the Pact's leader, Sarah Regis, providing her intelligence in exchange for her turning a blind eye to their activities. However, that didn't prevent the Malthus to try to suborn as many enlistees as possible into the Pact's military, though with limited success, and also to infiltrate into the Pact's administration.[4][5][6]

At 3152, on Pandora, Irwin Keeling, CEO of Red Devil Industries, was member of the Syndicate, and he made an alliance with Elam Nobu, the planetary governor, in his plan to secede the planet from the Pact and return it to the Commonwealth, which represented a bigger business opportunity. But when the Baron's forces lost the party, Keeling took all the available 'Mechs with him and abandoned the baron, openly supporting the Pact.[7]
