Maxwell is known throughout the Free Worlds League for two things: Exporting food and capable Parlimentarians. The mostly mountainous terrain makes farming the few flat areas critically important, and it also makes most land vehicles useless. The few broad plains that are available are devoted to farming, silos, and a few DropPorts for visiting DropShips to load their cargo.[1]

Instead of a few large cities, most of the population live on smaller homesteads located in the mountain ranges. In addition to freeing up more flatland for farming, the position of the homes allows for better defense. (Though as of 3025 this is mostly theoretical as Maxwell had never seen enemy forces.) Each of these homesteads features capable communications gear, and the garages are usually occupied by personal hovercraft. Most of the work is done by a beast of burden called the taraises.[1]

The Parlimentarians from Maxwell have also provided great services to the Free Worlds League. Among their number are Ronald Iasceau, who negotiated trade tariffs and agreements with the Capellan Confederation during the Star League era; Jimmy Romanici, who opposed Kenyon Marik's plan to leave the Star League; and Carolyn Levanthal, who defended Sir Carven Gibson when his peace proposals led to charges of treason.[1]

During the Jihad the Maxwell Planetary Defense Consortium (MPDC) took part in a number of projects intended to enhance Duchy of Tamarind defenses and the local military defense industry. One of the results was the experimental Galleon Maxwell, a project which turned out to be overly-complex Infantry Fighting Vehicle; another was the Thumper Maxwell, an attempt to produce a copy of the Thumper artillery vehicle produced by Brooks Incorporated, but using generally simpler, more robust technology. Unfortunately, this project didn't go particularly well. The one piece of advanced technology on the Thumper Maxwell, a complex Angel ECM Suite, proved too complex for local defense companies to produce. Further complicating this problem was the member company of the Maxwell consortium chosen to produce the Thumper Maxwell; while the company had a reputation for producing rugged spaceport crawlers, it was unused to volume production, and the Tamarind military procurement department had little experience at actively growing the defense sector. The results included but were not limited to regular production overruns, delays, low unit production and vehicles having to ship with inferior ECM systems to those originally planned.[16]

Matters became even worse for the MPDC when the Jihad began to wind down, as Brooks Inc. became aware of the MPDCs violation of their intellectual property rights, and when MPDC and the Duchy of Tamarind rejected an initial court case on the grounds of national security, Brooks Inc. used their substantial interstellar economic pull to embargo MPDC sales to other states in the region. Following swift negotiations on all parts, the matter was finally resolved with a token cash payment for royalties to Brooks Inc, recognition of the licensing for the Thumper, and government-furnished construction of plants within the Duchy of Tamarind to produce the chassis and ECM components for the Thumper. In exchange, Brooks Inc used their expertise to assist in the construction of the various plants within Duchy space, and began line production of the new Thumper vehicle from their plants on Irian from 3089.[16]
