Planetary Geography

Okefenokee is dominated by swamps that encircle the tropical and temperate regions of the planet, including one named the "Great Swamp". Located beneath the many swamps is a vast quantity of oil.[1] The nine small continents and three archipelagos that make up the bulk of Okefenokee's landmass all suffer from storms throughout the local year and the jungles and swamps are all populated by aggressive local wildlife.[2]

Planetary History

Having been colonised in the twenty-sixth century by deeply religious individuals seeking the solitude of deep space,[2] by the end of the Third Succession War Okefenokee was one of the poorest worlds to be found within the borders of the Federated Suns. For much of the planet's history the settlements on Okefenokee were limited to isolated villages occupied by religious zealots dotted around within the Great Swamp, sharing the world with native fauna that most humans would find to be either dangerous or simply disgusting. The arrival of Interstellar Star Petroleum changed things signficantly; under the auspices of the Federated Suns government, Interstellar Star Petroleum were conducting a vast exploratory survey, and that survey discovered the vast oil reserves located under the swamps on the planet.[1]

The discovery resulted in an ecomonic boom for the planet, with people arriving in large numbers and outside money and products pouring into the planet, much to the consternation of the local population; by 3025, the original population of Okefenokee had resorted to shooting at those who ventured into the swamps.[1]

By 3067 relations between the local population and the petroleum companies looking to exploit Okefenokee had degenerated even further; while some residents of the planet were fighting a legal campaign against those they considered to be interlopers, others were using violence to protest against the companies.[2]

The local economy of Okefenokee continued to be dominated by simple bartering between locals for the foods and services they needed, although a small number of educated people from outside Okefenokee had taken up the cause of the local population when it came to dealing with the various petroleum companies. Despite the growing population Okefenokee possessed just three large cities at this point - the planetary capital, Okesten, and the cities of Juriya and Setiq; by far the greater part of the settlements on the planet remained small enclaves deep within the jungles and swamps, the largest inhabited by perhaps a few thousand people.[2]
