History

Age of War

When the Hegemony Armed Forces began to introduce the new Avatar-class heavy cruiser to service the decision was made to place the bulk of the older Aegis-class heavy cruisers in mothballs, orbiting the sun at a position somewhere between Terra and Mars, with a small number staying in active service as training vessels. The ship which would later be known as the Olympic was one of the Aegis-class ships to have survived her service to the Terran Hegemony, and when First Lord Ian Cameron of the Star League chose to bring the Aegis fleet out of mothballs in 2582 two-thirds of the Aegis class went on to service in the newly-formed Star League Defense Force; the remaining third of the fleet[1] - of which the Olympic was one[2] - were sold to the various Star League member states, and the Olympic was purchased by the Free Worlds League along with a small number of sister ships.[1]

Star League Era

The Olympic went on to serve as the flagship of the Free Worlds League Navy Second Fleet, and in 2763 was involved in a brief battle between the Second Fleet and the Star League Defense Force Seventh Fleet in the Calloway VI system. It was unclear whether the flotilla from the Seventh Fleet fired first or the Second fleet, but the venerable and renowned League-class destroyer FWLS Albert Marik was destroyed in the opening salvoes and both the Olympic and the SLS Hartford required dry dock repairs before they could return to operational status.[3]

Succession Wars

The Olympic went on to serve the Free Worlds League for two and a half centuries before being lost in action against a battle group from the Draconis Combine in 2838 during what was known as the ComStar War. The Olympic was left drifting in the outer reaches of the Tania Borealis system until the hulk was rediscovered in 3057 by the League; the decision was made to recover the Olympic as a part of the League's WarShip rearmament programme as she was considered to be repairable, and several months later the repaired and refurbished FWLS Olympic joined the Free Worlds League's nascent WarShip fleet.[2]

The existence of the Olympic was kept a secret, and by early 3059 the Olympic was one of six vessels within the League's "secret" fleet, serving alongside a pair of recovered Essex-class destroyers, the FWLS Raven (formerly the SLS Oslo) and the FWLS Schrack, the Vincent-class corvette FWLS Liberty (formerly the SLS Richmond) and the Zechetinu-class corvettes FWLS Attica and FWLS Karelia.[4]

Another recovered Aegis-class heavy cruiser was undergoing refurbishment at the same time, the former SLS Impetuous, and was due to enter service at some point after 3060; due to be renamed the FWLS Nueva Badajoz[5] the Impetuous was intended to serve as a sister ship to the Olympic, although as all of the Aegis class ships to be retained by the Star League underwent extensive refurbishment and upgrades via the Di Tron Heavy Industries shipyards in the Terran Hegemony before entering service with the SLDF the Impetuous was likely to be more advanced than the Olympic.[1]

By 3067 the Olympic had been in service for a decade and was a part of what was publicly considered to be the largest black water navy in the Inner Sphere.[6]

The Jihad

The Olympic was suborned by the Word of Blake during the Jihad; the Blakists deployed the Olympic alongside at least two other former Free Worlds League vessels they had seized control of - the Agamemnon-class heavy cruisers FWLS Aineas and FWLS Troy - in an attack on Arc-Royal in 3072. Both the Olympic and the Troy were destroyed during the attack[7][8] although the battle also saw the destruction of two defending Clan Wolf-in-Exile WarShips, the Aegis-class CWS Jade Wolf and the Vincent Mk. 42-class corvette CWS Valiant.[9]
