General Oscar Long was a mercenary officer who later joined the Magistracy Armed Forces (MAF).

History[edit]

In 3050 Oscar Long held the rank of major and commanded Long's Light Lancers, the first battalion of the Canopian Highlanders mercenary regiment.[1] By 3054, Long had reached the rank of colonel and commanded the entire Canopian Highlanders regiment.[2][3]

In 3057, Long's employer, Emma Centrella Magestrix of the Magistracy of Canopus proposed to secretly expand the Canopian Highlanders with the goal of eventually integrating Long's unit into the MAF. Colonel Long made a counter-offer to the Magestrix: she would provide the support to expand each of the Highlanders' the Highlanders' three battalions into three full regiments, two of which would join the MAF and the third would remain a mercenary unit. The Magestrix agreed to Long's plan.[4]

Colonel Long was erroneously reported as having been killed during a Marian Hegemony raid against Gambilon, and that Major Judith Wood, commander of the Canopian Highlanders' second battalion, assumed the rank of colonel and command of the Highlanders.[5]

The Canopian Highlanders completed their secret expansion by June of 3059, which is when the 1st and 2nd Magistracy Highlanders officially entered service with the MAF.[4] Colonel Judith Wood retained command of the Canopian Highlanders, which remained a mercenary unit.[6] Colonel Long was promoted to General and served the commander of the Magistracy Highlanders brigade through at least 3067.[7][8] As a brigade commander, General Long served on the Magestrix Command Center.[9]

General Long's fate is unknown, but he was no longer in command of the Magistracy Highlanders as of 3085.[10]

Notes[edit]

Oscar Long may be related to Harrison Long, the commander of the Canopian Highlanders in 3025,[11] who later served as an aide to Magestrix Emma Centrella in 3050,[1] but this has not been explicitly stated.

The incorrect report of Long's death in combat appears in the Canopian Highladners' unit profile in Field Manual: Mercenaries.[5] Field Manual: Mercenaries has an in-universe date of 1 October 3059,[12] which is a few months after the Magistracy Highlander regiments formally entered service with the MAF.[4] It is unclear how or why Wolfnet made this error.
