Otto von Strang was the ruler of the Barony of Strang in the last days of the Third Succession War.[1]

A descendent of Colonel Gunthar von Strang from the twenty-eighth century, Otto von Strang dreamed of launching a Holy War of Redemption in which he would one day reclaim the Rim Worlds Republic. He despised the Star League and extended that prejudice to encompass all things originating from the Inner Sphere; items or people from the Inner Sphere were subject to immediate confiscation or imprisonment. Continuing to preach of an "inevitable" Inner Sphere invasion of Von Strang's World, the baron ensured that the population remained locked into a feudal relationship with the various local Wardens, providing continued labor and services in exchange for food.[1]
To further his plans for a Holy War and planning to recapture the lost worlds of the Republic for his own, Otto von Strang had managed to build up his military forces to more than a battalion of 'Mechs supported by two DropShips and a JumpShip, and he had launched a number of raids against outposts on the border of the Lyran Commonwealth. The Lyran officials ignored these raids as not worthy of retaliation.[1]

The Fifth Galedon Regulars had been stationed along the Periphery for a hundred years fighting against pirates and bandit kingdoms until they were reassigned in 3019 to the Federated Suns border. Either Strang's raids on Lyran border outposts happened after 3019, or were considered low priority while the Fifth was undertaking a successful campaign against the Belt Pirates in the 3010s.[2]
