Udet was a graduate of the Nagelring, who became a career LAAF officer, rising through the ranks without the benefit of the right social connections.
Early in his career he was being groomed for regimental command, though his preference for leading from the front in his 'Mech held him back, as he did not want to accept a promotion which would leave in stuck behind the lines in a Command HQ.
During Clan Jade Falcon's invasion of Arcturus in 3142, the then Hauptmann Udet took over command of his battalion, when his CO buckled under the stress and failed to provide timely orders. Together with Hauptmann-General Ian Chesterton, Udet's actions helped make the best of a bad situation, and brought him greater attention from senior officers.[1][2]
BattleMech[edit]
Udet was known to have piloted a VTR-V1-H Vulture Mk IV OmniMech, nicknamed "Schmutzvogel" (Dirty Bird).[1][2]
