Overview[edit]

Sador (Gamma Cygni) is an F-class star, described to be located 815 light years from the Sol system (see Notes). It was not specified if it features any planets to form a star system, but even if so, the system would presumably be uninhabited.

In 3002, Sador was visited by the Explorer Corps vessel ECV Herschel which studied the star for six weeks before moving on to the "nearby" (see Notes) Cygnus X-1 black hole/supergiant binary star system.[1]

Notes[edit]

  • Gamma Cygni (aka Sador, Sadir, or Sadr, from Arabic Sadr al Dedjadjet) is a real F8-class star located approximately 1,800 light years from the Sol system. Its BattleTech counterpart that was visited by the Herschel was said to lie only 815 light years from Sol,[1] while the farthest Explorer Corps mission up to that time was explicitly described as a voyage to the Orion Nebula 1,600 light years away; the wording could be taken as a hint to mean the mission to Sador actually went further out. It is thus possible that the stated distance of 815 light-years was a clerical error and meant to read 1,815 light-years instead, which would be in line with the real-world star.
  • Similarly, the Herschel reportedly then traveled a "short distance" from Sador to Cygnus X-1 to study the latter system from a "safe distance". Cygnus X-1 may seem to be nearby within the Cygnus constellation as seen from earth, but the real-world Cygnus X-1 is actually some 6,070 light years away from the Sol system—over 3.37 times as far away than the real Sador, and roughly 7.5 times as far away as suggested in BattleTech. It could be assumed that the "safe distance" the Herschel had to keep from the Cygnus X-1 black hole/supergiant binary system was measured in astronomical terms, and that the vessel therefore traveled a short distance from Sador to observe Cygnus X-1 from a safe distance that was actually several hundred light-years away.
  • The actual positions of Sador or Cygnus X-1 on the BattleTech star map are unspecified, though like their real-world counterparts they apparently lie in almost the same direction as seen from Earth.
