History[edit]

Early Life[edit]

The descendant of a Star League Defense Force solider who chose to stay behind in the Inner Sphere and become a freelance mercenary, rather than join Aleksandr Kerensky's Operation EXODUS, being a mercenary MechWarrior was in Santiago Padilla's blood. Therefore becoming a MechWarrior with the Ghost Legion, with its mercenary past, was a nature choice for Padilla.[2] With the Ghost Legion, Padilla commanded a Reconnoiter Lance, which included Kenyata Woods, Sakeena Gilco and K.M. Moran.[5]

Battle of Ronel[edit]

In May 3133 Padilla helped to repulse a raid on Ronel by Dragon's Fury forces under Tai-i Abeda Measho of The Brotherhood, who were seeking to expand their control in the Republic of the Sphere's Prefecture III and Prefecture IV. As the highest ranking MechWarrior amongst the world's defenders, Padilla was tasked by local Republic Militia commander Colonel Wayne Duvall to lead the defense of the capital city Lenor, against the Fury's initial landing.[3]

The initial engagement being inconclusive, Padilla was able to lead the Fury away from the city into the Lenor Valley, where Padilla and Measho again clashed, when Padilla's unit was ambushed in Ronel's toxic highlands.[6] This engagement again ending in a stalemate, the Fury fell back from Lenor, choosing to dig in at a secondary beachhead at the Omar's Vein mining complex owned by Omar-Hyrogi Enterprises on the Oxo continent.[7]

Assisted by Lisabet Wolf of the Steel Wolves, Padilla assaulted this complex after a suborbital combat drop, hoping to collapse the mine shafts with the Fury still within them.[1] This plan however did not succeed, forcing Padilla to fall back to regroup. Running out of time before Fury reinforcements might arrive, Padilla decided to try again to dislodge the Fury from their warren, this time with a direct assault which would decide the fate of the world.[8] This battle was reported on by journalist Cameron Shaw, who interviewed Padilla and Lisabet Wolf before the assault commenced.[4]

BattleMech[edit]

Padilla was known to have piloted a Firestarter BattleMech, serial number FS748-24Y, nicknamed "Matchstick". This 'Mech first experienced combat in 2900, in the hands of the Eridani Light Horse, during an assault on the Draconis Combine world of Radalah. It subsequently passed through the ownership of a number of mercenary commands, including Blue Star Irregulars, Kell Hounds, Waco Rangers and Wilson's Hussars. It came into the hands of the then Vanguard Legion during a game of poker, when the Legion's CO Colonel Chad Dean won it from the Harlock's Warriors CO Samantha Viele in 3061.[2]
