Tai-shu Shichiroji Hayashida was the Warlord of the Benjamin Military District from at least 3145 to 3152.[1][2]

History[edit]

As of 3145, Hayashida was the oldest of the Combine's Warlords by over four decades, leaving him with the nickname "the old man". During his long life up to this time, his family grew large, with him counting nineteen great-grand children. His descendants included many who served with the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery, such as a armor Battalion commander grandson Alphonse Hayashida and aerospace pilot great-granddaughter, who were assigned to the Sixteenth Sun Zhang Academy Cadre. In order to evaluate these two, whose military performance was outstanding, Hayashida had the Sixteenth stationed with him on Benjamin together with the Seventeenth Benjamin Regulars as of 3145.[3][4][5]

During the Combine's invasion of the Federated Suns, Hayashida remained on Benjamin, focusing on defending the border with the Rasalhague Dominion. While this caused some of unfavorably compare him to his fellow Warlords, who were more active fighting the Suns personally, Hayashida was known to reply "None of my fellow Warlords are holding off the Ghost Bears single-handedly".[6]

A samurai of the old ways, Hayashida always placed giri (duty) before ninjo (heart). Accordingly when he was required to double the number of Regiments forming part of the Benjamin Regulars, while he regretted splitting up comrades who had long served together, he did as he was commanded. This reorganization however did leave some of his newly formed Regiments, such as the Sixth Benjamin Regulars, well beyond his expectations in terms of large unit actions.[7]

Politically, Hayashida was a major supporter of Gunji-no-Kanrei Matsuhari Toranaga, which left him on the outer with Coordinator Yori Kurita. Near the end of the invasion of the Federated Suns in 3152, Yori therefore ordered Hayashida to remain on Benjamin, to help keep Toranaga isolated.[2]
