Planetary Geography

Shinonoi has four major landmasses, the continents of Jukemwa, Kokuya, Matsuda and Narosi. Jukemwa lies completely within the northern polar zone of Shinonoi, is largely covered by snow and ice and was considered largely uninhabited. The equatorial continent of Narosi is the smaller of the four continents and has an abundance of mineral deposits and metal ores.[1]

Planetary History

Early History

As a planet with a long, mild growing season, fertile land and ample native livestock, Shinonoi has a long history of farming and ranching, and the continents of Kokuyra and Matsuda were dedicated to both activities when the planet was first settled. While Jukemwa is an unwelcoming continent small settlements of hardy souls were founded on various islands off Jukemwa and established what would become some of Shinonoi's most successful fishing communities.[1]

With the discovery of the mineral riches on Narosi the continent became the focus for industries related to mining and manufacturing as well as the site of the planetary capital, Marimasu.[1]

Succession Wars and Jihad

Though it was subject to a few raids from the Federated Suns, the most damaging event in the planet's history occurred on the 18th of July 3075. A rogue asteroid, eight kilometers wide and identified with the designation SH01378-A, slammed into Narosi.[41][42] The Shinonoi government enacted at least three plans to try and divert the asteroid from its course; remote thrusters were mounted on the asteroid, but failed to divert it enough, despite burning up until the asteroid hit the atmosphere, a DropShip, the Bright Sun, was lost while attempting to use its thrusters to adjust the path of the asteroid, and a number of DropShips and small craft launched multiple nuclear strikes on the asteroid. The last attempt succeeded in dislodging some fragments of the asteroid, but this only created a debris field that followed the asteroid into the atmosphere of Shinonoi. Government efforts to clear the impact zone were complicated by the Shinto Prophet Musashi, who called on the faithful to perform a Kagura dance in the impact zone, convinced that it would drive the asteroid away; just as the government efforts to divert the asteroid failed, so did the kami no kura performed by the many Shintoists gathered together by Musashi's visions.[43]

The resultant explosion leveled the continent, destroying three cities and setting the rest of the continent on fire. The material ejected into the atmosphere blocked sunlight, preventing it from reaching the planet's surface. The result was a severe drop in temperature, with Shinonoi losing approximately 5 degrees Celsius after the impact. The lack of sunlight and lower temperature devastated the agricultural sector. To top things off, the impact also transmitted energy along the fault lines located in the planet's crust, causing earthquakes on Matsuda and Kokuya, the two continents dedicated to agriculture.[1]

Even with the efforts being taken by the various interstellar nations to combat the Word of Blake at the time the Combine relief agencies and allies of the Combine poured aid into Shinonoi. This aid included money, medical aid and equipment and the leader of the allied coalition, Devlin Stone, personally sponsored a program to restore order after the destruction of Miramasu and to assist helping the planet recover.[1][44]

In addition to the physical and environmental damage done to Shinonoi by the asteroid strike, the Combine response to the strike provoked outrage from many Arkab leaders; on the 1st of August, Gunji-no-Kanrei Kiyomori Minamoto joined the coalition leader Devlin Stone in promising aid to Shinonoi, a distinct contrast to the position taken by the Combine following the devastating asteroid strike on Arkab earlier in the Jihad.[41][42][44] The first ships bringing aid to Shinonoi arrived on the 7th of September.[42][45]

Post-Jihad Era

When the borders of the Republic of the Sphere expanded in the 3080s Shinonoi was incorporated into the Republic and Devlin Stone had many people relocated to the planet to reclaim what had been lost as a result of the asteroid strike. By 3130 the recovery efforts had allowed Shinonoi to prosper again; the fisheries of Jukumwa were making their first profits since the asteroid strike, and Shinonoi had become a viable agricultural world once more. The continent showing the least recovery was Narosi, which was still dotted with the blasted remains of dead cities and was still largely a wasteland, although a number of small towns had been established. A new planetary capital, Rising Sun, had been established on Matsuda and was the site of the largest spaceport on Shinonoi. The bulk of the planetary defense force was located near Rising Sun in the city of Kaffeli.[1]
