History

One of Clan Ghost Bear's second-line garrison Galaxies transferred from the Clan Homeworlds with the Clan's shift to the Ghost Bear Dominion, Sigma Galaxy underwent a curious transformation upon its arrival in the Inner Sphere. While the majority of the front-line invading Clusters in the Clan Ghost Bear Occupation Zone were unfriendly if not outright hostile to integration with the arriving Homeworld BattleMech and Elemental garrison troops, they were totally resistant to working with Combat Vehicle units at all. With Sigma Galaxy under the command of a veteran tank commander, many conventional vehicle troops requested transfer to the more welcoming Galaxy, swelling its TOE with tanks, hovercraft, VTOLs and other support vehicles. The expanded Sigma would dispatch its forces to reinforce the Bear's other Galaxies as needed, though only the second-line ones would request the vehicle galaxy's aid; the front-line galaxies would never request or accept such assistance.[1]

First Draconis Combine/Ghost Bear War

Despite being a second-line Galaxy, elements of Sigma Galaxy took an active part in the First Draconis Combine / Ghost Bear War,[2] which began in 3062 with a suicidal attack by three regiments of the Alshain Avengers against Alshain.[3] The Seventh Bear Regulars joined with Omega Galaxy's Tenth Bear Cuirassiers in an assault on Yamarovka in the face of determined resistance from the defending Nova Cat forces. The Seventh and Tenth were ultimately victorious,[2] although the agreement ending the War saw the borders between the Ghost Bears and the Draconis Combine largely returned to their prewar positions.[3]

Late in the War the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery launched an attack on Last Frontier, a daring deep strike that mauled the defending Twenty-first Phalanx and Twelfth Provisional Garrison Cluster.[2]

The Jihad

Morale within Sigma Galaxy plummeted during the Jihad, as the bulk of Sigma was consigned to garrison duty within the Ghost Bear Dominion during the Ghost Bear campaign against the Word of Blake whilst the Seventh Bear Regulars were reassigned to Omicron Galaxy to join the attack. The drop in morale quickly changed once the Second Freemen and First Kavalleri regiments[4]—both former Free Rasalhague Republic regiments—rebelled in October 3076 against the Trials of Position mandated by the Ghost Bears after the incorporation of the Free Rasalhague Republic into the Ghost Bear Dominion.[5][6] Sigma Galaxy were positioned to contain the rogue units, working alongside Tau Galaxy[7] until Rasalhague Galaxy could return to Dominion space to lead efforts to put down the mutiny without creating a public relations catastrophe.[4]

Following the liberation of Terra Sigma Galaxy incorporated the Sixth Bear Regulars, who were transferred into Sigma[4] from Omicron Galaxy[8] to compensate Sigma for the loss of the Seventh Bear Regulars; the Sixth had trouble adjusting to life in Sigma, however, viewing the Galaxy as being a vehicle galaxy.[4]

The Dark Age

The Ghost Bear's Theta Galaxy had taken substantial damage during the Jihad, and the Dominion Council decided to disband a number of second-line Galaxies to assist in rebuilding various elements of the touman. Sigma Galaxy was one of the Galaxies chosen to be disbanded, with three complete Clusters[9]—the Sixth Bear Regulars, Tenth Phalanx, and Twelfth Provisional Garrison Cluster—transferring into Theta Galaxy.[10] The Twenty-first Phalanx was transferred into Kappa Galaxy.[11]

Notes

  • It is assumed that Sigma Galaxy was disbanded in or around 3080 based upon the Tenth Phalanx write-up as a defending unit on Goito[9] during the Bloody Tricentennial attack against the Kappa-4 facility in 3080,[14] but this detail may only have been included within the Theta Galaxy write-up due to the absence of a Sigma Galaxy write-up within Field Manual: 3085.
  • Special Rules for Sigma Galaxy can be found in Field Manual: Warden Clans, pages 180 and 182.
