Plot summary

On Conquista in the Duchy of Andurien, a hovertank crew from Rapier Company, 23rd Marik Reconnaissance Regiment, consisting of Staff Sergeant Faust Myers, his driver William "Sully" Sullivan and gunner Goldie Townsend are roused early on 23 November 3038 to mount up. Their unit's right flank has lost contact with an enemy unit, and Rapier Company are sent out on a recon mission in their Pegasus hovertanks.

Patrolling for hours in the light of Conquista's two moons, they eventually encounter a lance of light 'Mechs. Initial IFF readings mark them as friendlies, but it turns out they are in fact enemy units. The hovertanks engage and inflict some damage, but are driven off when more and heavier enemy units appear. Rapier Company take heavy losses, and Myers' hovertank is sent off to warn the regiment about an approaching battalion, leaving captain Myronakis behind in a wrecked tank.

Back at the HQ, Myers learns that a friendly unit had disobeyed orders and advanced too far and too fast, leaving a gap in the line that the Anduriens had exploited for a breakthrough. Rapier Company's report was crucial in containing the damage. They are to be sent out again in three hours, to support the hunt for the enemy units that have broken through.
