Steelton
System Information
X:Y Coordinates-105.76 : 422.33[e]

The Steelton system is the location of at least one habitable world, and as at 3145 was located in the Clan Hell's Horses Occupation Zone.[1][2]

System Description

The Steelton system is located near the Persistence and Toland systems.[1][2]

System History

The Steelton system was colonized at some point during the mid-twenty-fourth century by refugees from the Principality of Rasalhague.[3]

Political Affiliation

Planetary History

Founding

Steelton was settled by a mixture of artists and craftsmen from Kufstein and Predlitz, technicians from St. John and engineers from New Bergen. This eclectic mix of settlers were refugees fleeing from the Rasalhague Principality as a result of Shiro Kurita's campaign to try and annex this nation during the 2330s-2340s.[3]

Rim Worlds Republic

Steelton was one of the worlds targeted by Maxwell Rowe during his efforts to build up the Rim Worlds Republic, beginning in 2330; Rowe began by negotiating a series of trade and barter pacts with worlds like Steelton, carefully avoiding any suggestions of a military alliance, defensive or otherwise. Rowe added offers of social and technological favors including access to new Rim Worlds Republic university facilities over time, and through guile and slow but steady progress persuaded the natives of Steelton to join the Republic.[4]

Reunification War

By the end of the Age of War Steelton was a member of the Apollo Province of the Rim Worlds Republic.[5] Civil war erupted in the Rim Worlds Republic in 2575, with the factions polarized around those loyal to First Consul Gregory Amaris and those loyal to the Rift Republican Army and the Rim Provisional Government.[45] Stationed on Steelton at the time were elements of the Fifth Amaris Fusiliers, who remained loyal to Amaris and who would remain on the planet for more than fifteen years.[46][47]

The Star League eventually decided to intervene in the civil war in support of Gregory Amaris, and in 2579 assembled Task Force MAILED FIST to help secure Amaris' control over the Rim Worlds Republic. A multinational force headed by the Star League Defense Force, Task Force MAILED FIST was responsible for executing Operation MAILED FIST, the name given to the military intervention. The first wave of attacks focused on securing significant worlds near Apollo,[48] until a destructive raid on Alarion by the Fourth Amaris Fusiliers in retaliation prompted the SLDF to alter its initial strategy for the campaign, the focus shifted to reducing Rim Worlds Army concentrations throughout the Republic and the capture of key worlds.[49] It was during this stage that the detachments of the Fifth Amaris Fusiliers stationed in Star's End and Persistence were neutralized by Star League forces, leaving the detachment on Steelton as the last active contingent from the Fifth.[47]

In late 2584 the SLDF changed tactics again; a number of major RWA units had been destroyed or captured, and the focus for the campaign shifted to capturing worlds of strategic importance, but the campaign was slowed by the greatly increased resistance offered by the RWA and local civilian populations, prompted by atrocities performed by the Draconis Auxiliary Corps when they captured Nightwish in mid-2584.[50]

General Nathan Isaacson assigned two divisions to the assault on Steelton in mid 2595, a much larger force than the surviving elements of the Fifth Fusiliers; in one of the few actions where divisions from different corps fought alongside each other, the Eleventh Royal Division from IV Corps and the Sixteenth Division from VI Corps landed on Steelton.[51] With the defeat of the Fifth Fusiliers and the capture of Steelton Task Force MAILED FIST had secured the last world controlling the approaches to Apollo[52] although military operations continued; the Sixteenth remained on Steelton until the end of Operation MAILED FIST in late 2596, but the Eleventh redeployed in 2596 to capture the Vulture's Nest system.[51]

Star League Era

Steelton was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth during the 2773 - 2775 Republic-Commonwealth War.[15]

Third Succession War

Steelton was the target of one of the diversionary raids launched by the DCMS in 2866 in order to divert Lyran forces from the Federation of Skye. [53]

Clan Invasion of 3050

In April of 3050, Clan Jade Falcon dispatched the Eighth and the Twelfth Falcon Regulars Clusters to take Steelton. The world's defenses were lead by Colonel Francis "Crab" Carranza, commanding the planet's militia force and the First Regiment of the Twelfth Star Guards. Colonel Carranza bluffed the Jade Falcon forces by making it appear he had a brigade of forces defending the planet. The inflated number of troops forced the bidding Jade Falcon commander to call in reinforcements which ultimately led to the Colonel's demise. The Falcons targetted the planet's capital city of Cregan's Bluff as the main objective; in the course of the battle the Twelfth Star Guards positions were overrun by Falcon forces, but the Twelfth managed to hold their positions long enough for elements of the Star Guards and the surviving militia forces to evacuate the planet, although Colonel Carranza was killed.[28]

Jihad

During the Jihad, Clan Hell's Horses launched a invasion of the Clan Wolf holdings in the Inner Sphere, acquiring holdings for their own relocation to Spheroid space. Steelton was one of the first worlds targetted, and was attacked in the opening wave of attacks that fell between the 21st and 28th of February 3071.[37] The acquisition of Steelton by the Hell's Horses wasn't unopposed; between the 7th and 14 of April 3071, Clan Jade Falcon launched an attack against the Hell's Horses forces on the world.[54] Despite the efforts of the Jade Falcons, the Hell's Horses managed to recapture Steelton by the end of June.[38]
