Planetary History

Reunification War

By the end of the Age of War Taran's World was a member of the Apollo Province of the Rim Worlds Republic.[1] Civil war erupted in the Rim Worlds Republic in 2575, with the factions polarized around those loyal to First Consul Gregory Amaris and those loyal to the Rift Republican Army and the Rim Provisional Government.[33] Stationed on Taran's World at the time were the Second Amaris Legionnaires, who remained loyal to Amaris and who would remain on the planet for more than fifteen years.[34][35]

The Star League eventually decided to intervene in the civil war in support of Gregory Amaris, and in 2579 assembled Task Force MAILED FIST to help secure Amaris' control over the Rim Worlds Republic. A multinational force headed by the Star League Defense Force, Task Force MAILED FIST was responsible for executing Operation MAILED FIST, the name given to the military intervention. The first wave of attacks focused on securing significant worlds near Apollo,[36] until a destructive raid on Alarion by the 4th Amaris Fusiliers in retaliation prompted the SLDF to alter its initial strategy for the campaign, the focus shifted to reducing Rim Worlds Army concentrations throughout the Republic and the capture of key worlds.[37] It was during this stage that the detachments of the Fifth Amaris Fusiliers stationed in Star's End and Persistence were neutralized by Star League forces, leaving the detachment on Steelton as the last active contingent from the Fifth.[35]

In late 2584 the SLDF changed tactics again; a number of major RWA units had been destroyed or captured, and the focus for the campaign shifted to capturing worlds of strategic importance, but the campaign was slowed by the greatly increased resistance offered by the RWA and local civilian populations, prompted by atrocities performed by the Draconis Auxiliary Corps when they captured Nightwish in mid-2584.[38]

General Nathan Isaacson assigned a division from VI Corps to the assault on Taran's World in 2595; with the capture of Steelton earlier in the year, Task Force MAILED FIST had secured the approaches to Apollo, but Isaacson wanted the Second Legionnaires - the last active Rim Worlds Army formation outside of Apollo - contained prior to the battle for Apollo itself.[39] The Seventeenth Royal Division were deployed forward from Bensinger and successfully captured Taran's World, remaining in place as the local garrison until the end of Operation MAILED FIST in late 2596.[40]

Notes

Taran's World was located near Ichmandu and Paulus Prime. Although Taran's World is detailed on maps within Handbook: Major Periphery States up until 2750[3] none of the maps from later eras present in the Handbooks series of sourcebooks extend far enough into the Periphery to confirm or deny the continued presence of this system during the Succession Wars era.
