Uniforms of the AFFS

The Uniforms of the AFFS have played an important part in creating esprit de corps in the armed forces of the Federated Suns. While functional and free of ostentatious trappings, variations were allowed so that each military unit could honor the traditions they had built up over centuries of fighting.[1] With the creation of the Federated Commonwealth, changes were made as a compromise to the merging of the AFFS with the LCAF to create a new military organization. Changes to the traditional Federation uniform were inspired by those worn by the Lyran armed forces, particularly the dress uniform, which surprisingly was met with little objection as many Federation soldiers saw these as improvements.[2] After the secession of the Lyran Alliance, many went back to wearing traditionally styled uniforms, a trend which became official policy after the FedCom Civil War.[3]

MechWarriors

Due to the dangers of overheating when operating a BattleMech, MechWarrior uniforms are designed to keep them as cool as possible. During the Succession Wars this often meant a Cooling Vest and little else, but in 3015 scientists from the New Avalon Institute of Science and Team Banzai created the Cooling Undershirt. Essentially a miniature version of the cooling vest, the undershirt operated on the same principle of circulating water or similar fluids around the wearer's torso. While not as efficient as a regular cooling vest, when combined together they allow the MechWarrior to survive more extreme temperatures than normal.[4] Thanks to continued technological progression, by 3062 many MechWarriors were being issued the more efficient Cooling Suits which provided both superior cooling and environmental protection.[5]

Just as House Davion traces its roots to medieval England and France, so too do its MechWarriors who, in kinship with the knights of the period, wear spurs on their boots.[4]
