Additional tips
Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the wiki:

• For policies and guidelines, see The Five Core Policies of BattleTechWiki and the BTW Policies. Another good place to check out is our market of Projects, to see how the smaller communities within BTW do things in their particular niche areas.
• Each and every page (articles, policies, projects, images, etc.) has its very own discussion/talk page, found on the tab line at the top of the page. This is a great place to find out what the community is discussing along that subject and what previous issues have already been solved.
• If you want to play around with your new wiki skills, the Sandbox is for you. Don't worry: you won't break anything. A great resource for printing out is the Wiki Cheat Sheet.
• If you're not registered, then please consider doing so. At the very least, you'll have a UserPage that you own, rather than sharing one with the community.
• Also consider writing something about yourself on your UserPage (marked as "Doctor X" at the top of the page, though only do this if you're registered). You'll go from being a 'redshirt' to a 'blueshirt,' with the respect of a more permanent member.
  • This is really helpful for the admins, as it gives your account that touch of "humanity" that assists us in our never-ending battle with spambots.
• For your first few edits on the wiki, please do not add any URLs (which can be an indicator of SPAM).
• Consider introducing yourself on our Discord server.
• In your Preferences, under the edit tab, consider checking Add pages I create to my watchlist and Add pages I edit to my watchlist, so that you can see how your efforts have affected the community. Check back on following visits by clicking on watchlist.
• If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random button in the sidebar, or check out the List of Wanted Pages. Or even go to Special Pages to see what weird stuff is actually tracked by this wiki.
• Please sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the circled button in this image; this will automatically produce your name (or IP address, if you are editing anonymously) and the date.

I also started out here by doing grammar work, then moved to more complicated things. Don't be shy about making edits; change what you think needs it. Editing here is a learning experience and you'll be just fine. We're pretty laid back and there's no deadline to finish things, so come and go as you please. To add to what Bob's said (and I have to keep reminding myself that it's Bob, not Bub...) welcome aboard, and thank you for signing up to help. Help is never turned down here! You'd be surprised how quickly you can move from fixing odd grammatical mistakes and typos to writing out complete notes and more. Sarna tends to pull in the faithful The Help & How To page in the sidebar on the left is a good way to start learning about writing articles, as is copying a current article and using it as a template, although sometimes the help files and current articles don't quite match up. A lot of areas on Sarna have project teams and project pages associated with them, and those project pages can be a good source of advice too. Everyone here's generally friendly and approachable - Bob's the man for all things grammatical (he's forever catching the British spellings that creep into my articles, and converting them to American spelling), Doneve's the man when it comes to graphics and bulk edits, Mbear is great with advice on writing, templates, formatting and military units, and Frabby's definitely the expert on novels/fiction, Sarna policies and so on. We're all on pretty regularly - don't be afraid to ask people things on their talk pages. Although sometimes you may need to nudge me to remember to reply, as I get a bit absentminded... Speaking of absentminded... the Manual of Style page is a good way to learn about things like the codes for formatting text, using references and the like; it's modelled on wikipedia, but there are some subtleties about BattleTech like how unit names are formatted that are captured in the style writing guide on Mbear's user page.BrokenMnemonic (talk) 00:03, 14 August 2014 (PDT)
