User talk:Harry

Welcome

Welcome, Harry, to BattleTechWiki!

We look forward to your contributions and want to help you get off to a good strong start. Hopefully you will soon join the army of BattleTech Editors! If you need help formatting the pages, visit the manual of style. For general questions go to the Help section or the FAQ. If you can't find your answer there, please ask an Admin.

Additional tips
Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the wiki:

  • For policies and guidelines, see The Five Core Policies of BattleTechWiki and the BTW Policies. Another good place to check out is our market of Projects, to see how the smaller communities within BTW do things in their particular niche areas.
  • Each and every page (articles, policies, projects, images, etc.) has its very own discussion/talk page, found on the tab line at the top of the page. This is a great place to find out what the community is discussing along that subject and what previous issues have already been solved.
  • If you want to play around with your new wiki skills, the Sandbox is for you. Don't worry: you won't break anything. A great resource for printing out is the Wiki Cheat Sheet.
  • If you're not registered, then please consider doing so. At the very least, you'll have a UserPage that you own, rather than sharing one with the community.
  • Also consider writing something about yourself on your UserPage (marked as "Harry" at the top of the page, though only do this if you're registered). You'll go from being a 'redshirt' to a 'blueshirt,' with the respect of a more permanent member.
    • This is really helpful for the admins, as it gives your account that touch of "humanity" that assists us in our never-ending battle with spambots.
  • For your first few edits on the wiki, please do not add any URLs (which can be an indicator of SPAM).
  • Consider introducing yourself on our Discord server.
  • In your Preferences, under the edit tab, consider checking Add pages I create to my watchlist and Add pages I edit to my watchlist, so that you can see how your efforts have affected the community. Check back on following visits by clicking on watchlist.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random button in the sidebar, or check out the List of Wanted Pages. Or even go to Special Pages to see what weird stuff is actually tracked by this wiki.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the circled button in this image; this will automatically produce your name (or IP address, if you are editing anonymously) and the date.

Again, welcome to Sarna's BattleTechWiki!

Good Work with O'Mallory's World

Hi Harry, thanks for working so hard on the planet data on Mallory's World. Specially going back and forth with CBT.COM board to make sure data from the Republic PDF and Handbooks were correct. I'd like to present you the Casual Edit Award, 1st ribbon for your hard work! -- Wrangler 17:28, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Hey, thanks a lot, Wrangler. I am not done yet. Harry 20:57, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Seconded. I didn't recognize your call sign on the CBT boards, so came here to make the corrections. Not only are they done, but well-referenced too. Ribbon well-deserved. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 00:39, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Italics and boldface in 'Mech articles

Hi Harry, I have worked over your recent edits on the Hunchback, Enforcer, Hermes II and Cicada. Please note that boldface is only used once in the article, when naming the subject for the first time. It can also be used later to highlight other names for the same subject (i.e. Hermes III) but it is not used for references to different 'Mechs (e.g. Hunchback IIC in the Hunchback article). Frabby 14:25, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Cicada

Hy Harry, can you give me a reference for the Cicada production by HartfordCo Industries, thanks.--Doneve 19:33, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Sure, I will add it to the article. TRO: 3039 says that it was produced by HartfordCo on Bryant before the destruction of the factory. The von Luckner article in the same book says that the tank was produced by HartfordCo Industries on Bryant. I assume that the two producers are the same. Harry 20:27, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
Yep, you are right, my failur.--Doneve 20:38, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Good edits

Project: Planet

Evening, Harry. Thanks for expressing interest in the project. I've reviewed your contributions, and it looks like you'd be a good candidate: when you're active, it appears you focus on a general subject ('Mechs, planets, etc). I'll be moving your name up to the active list. We aren't active just yet, as we're still trying to prepare and decide on how we're going to administer this huge task. However, please keep an eye on the talk pages, especially the Overhaul talk page (link provided on the Project: Planet page and please take part in the discussions, to help us together come up with a plan. BrokenMnemonic and I will be overhauling three 'sample' articles, from which to base our discussions. Thanks for offering.--Rev (talk|contribs) 23:03, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Planets Overhaul Phase 4

Hi Harry,

Revanche made some comments about Phase 4 of the overhaul over on BattleTechWiki_talk:Project_Planets/Planet_Overhaul#Phase_4 with a view to getting the test articles up to the same standard and agreeing what that standard should be. I've responded, but no-one else has yet, and I was hoping I could persuade you to weigh in with your opinions as you'll be one of those involved in converting the old articles into the new format. I don't think that we can have the standards all agreed and every planet article rewritten before Revanche gets back, but it'd be great to be able to get started on one of the small areas, and getting the standard template agreed for phase 4 would go a long way towards helping with that. BrokenMnemonic 07:07, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I had some trouble with my computer. But now I am back and I am goning to read my way through the Overhaul pages. Harry 10:48, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Sigurd

Hi Harry,

I like the update you did for Sigurd, but you need to be a little bit careful about saying that Sigurd was an independent world between the fall of the Rim Worlds Republic and the arrival of Hendrik Grimm. My memory's a bit fuzzy (I've been reading a lot of battletech books chasing stuff down, and they all blend together) but what happened after the RWR fell is rather fuzzy, and while we've got some maps, there aren't many maps at all of the region the modern Oberon Confederation sat in in Handbook: House Steiner, which is the only one to give us clear maps of the Lyran border during the succession wars. However, at least one book (I have a feeling it was Handbook: Major Periphery States) indicated that when the RWR collapsed, several small states formed in it's wake, including an Oberon Confederation, but the majority failed - and I'm 90% certain there's a mention that the Oberon Confederation was basically a failed state until Hendrik Grimm came along, appropriated the name and made it a fully fledged bandit kingdom.

Aha, just found the reference:

The nationalist cause survived for a time on Oberon VI and two neighboring worlds, Sigurd and Crellacor. Renamed the Oberon Confederation, this tiny collective managed to survive for nearly two decades, until it succumbed to repeated bandit raids and the harsh reality of interstellar isolation. The refugee settlements on Oberon lasted the longest, aided by the temperate climate and fertile soil, but the breakdown of irreplaceable technology eventually reduced them to isolated small towns much like those of the pre-spaceflight age. The Oberon Confederation would cease to exist in all but name until the 2840s, when Colonel Hendrik Grimm arrived on Oberon VI and set about remaking the moribund Confederation into his personal pirate empire.
  — Handbook: Major Periphery States, page 37

OK, I could've just stuck that into the entry for Sigurd myself, but that always feels a little rude to me given that it's freshly edited by you Wink.gif BrokenMnemonic 21:16, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Hey, thank you for this advice and your respectfulness. I just assumed that it was independend, for on the map on p. 36 in Handbook: House Steiner there are no additional boarders and I read somewhere that the Confederation was founded in 3012. I'm going to change the sentence. Harry 21:48, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
It's one of those things that stuck in my head because I'm quietly fascinated by the proto-nations that never made it in BattleTech, and are lost to history or which we've been given teasers on and nothing to work with... nations like the Nanking Collective, Chisholm Protectorate, Samoyedic Colonies and the like. The Rim Worlds Republic is a big part of BattleTech history, but one that hasn't really been explored - the Star League and 1st Ed Periphery books gave some details, and then it just fell off the grid completely, with the entire region being kept empty. In recent years, it's been cropping up more and more though - there was the Rim Collection, then the Rim Territories, now there's speculation that the Chainelaine Isles are a group of former RWR worlds that banded together, and I've seen comments on the CBT forum that there were other nations of former RWR worlds that came and went. I can't remember my phone number for the life of me, but I spent a week committing details of pre-2350 era nations in the Capellan Zone, trying to work out what the worlds in the Muskegon Coalition were, and the Chesteron Trade League/Federation/Province, and... and this is why Revanche keeps me away from sharp objects ;)
The fact that both HB:MPS and HB:HS went into some detail on the 2773-2775 Lyran Commonwealth/RWR war and Historical: Reunification War gave us loads on the RWR military makes me hope that the two Historical: Liberation of Terra volumes Herb's talked about will give us a big chunk of information on what happened in the RWR region up to the start of the First Succession War. That would make me a very happy camper!
That quote from HB:MPS is definitely the first place that it's ever been hinted that the Oberon Confederation existed as a nation before the arrival of Grimm, though... or at least, definitely in the context of every BattleTech sourcebook that came out up til Maximum Tech, which is where I dropped off until recently... It's an interesting retcon for TPTB to make. BrokenMnemonic 22:04, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Thats my opinion completely. I'm looking forward to the new books, especially the Liberation of Terra and HB: House Kurita. The past of the BT universe is my favorite timeline. From the Star League until the Succession Wars and I'm glad that the recent time shed some light on this neglected period. I hope the First Succession Wars will be covered in more detail.
I changed the article. Please tell me your opinon. Harry 22:24, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
A solid improvement to the original article, I think! And you prompted me to add in some owner history updates as well. Can you add the same detail to Crellacor and Oberon IV? That'll cover all three founding members of the Oberon Confederation then. I'm wondering if the faction page on the Oberon Confederation mentions it's beginnings, now... BrokenMnemonic 08:30, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Done :-) Harry 21:52, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Excellent, thank you Smiley.gif It's great to see you getting stuck into improving planet articles - and I think that definitely deserves encouragement. Therefore, I think you deserve to have one of these:

Image deletion requests

Harry, I definitely appreciate efforts to remove duplicate images. However, I started to deny all of the ones you posted recently because the first two I checked on were being used in a gallery and I could not verify the duplicate image. As long as the image is being properly used, I cannot delete it. However, if you point the original (or duplicate) image to the same articles/galleries the target one is used on (making it now unused), I can follow thru with the deletion. I left the remaining images alone, so that you could take a swing at them. You can quickly identify them here. Thanks. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 06:36, 10 February 2012 (PST)

Hi Revanche! All of the concerned images are only used in gallerys. I thought some time ago it was decided the wiki is no image deposit, that all pictures have to be used in an article and that the pure image galleries are going to be deleted. Am I wrong? Furthermore I am pretty sure, that they are all duplicates. I will look for the similar images and add their link to the deletion request. Harry 08:54, 11 February 2012 (PST)

Bloody Hands redirect

Hi, saw you created a redirect from Bloody Hands to Manei Domini. Seems wrong; it certainly isn't the correct translation in any case, though WoB "latin" is atrocious anyways. Is there any such canonical reference? Frabby 09:27, 27 September 2012 (PDT) Ah, just saw your subsequent edit to the MD article. Still, a source reference would be appreciated. Frabby 09:28, 27 September 2012 (PDT)

Hi, added the missing reference. Sorry about the delay.Harry (talk) 07:44, 21 November 2012 (PST)

Crucis Lancers

Hy Harry, i see you added some references to the Crucis Lancers article, please can you add page numbers to the ref. notes, thanks.--Doneve (talk) 09:02, 20 March 2013 (PDT)

Hi Doneve,
I did it on purpose, as i did not know how to reference the info correctly. Both sources mention it several times, even on the book covers.
But I am going to pick some especially obvious examples and change the references. Harry (talk) 12:28, 20 March 2013 (PDT)
Thanks a lot.--Doneve (talk) 12:33, 20 March 2013 (PDT)

System Coordinates naming question

Harry, I'm trying to get the band back together. Would you weigh in on this, please? --Revanche (talk|contribs) 17:09, 2 August 2017 (EDT)

Kestrel VTOL Clan origin?

In a BT forum thread, the MUL people are adamant that no source ever described the Kestrel (Combat Vehicle) as a Clan design. I haven't been able to find that information anywhere either. But in an edit dated 23 December 2011 you placed the Kestrel into the Clan General Combat Vehicles category. I believe you may have been mistaken? Is there any source for this that has been overlooked? For the time being, I have removed the category from the article just for Sarna to be on the safe side. Frabby (talk) 09:47, 24 April 2023 (EDT)
