Hello, Rev.
 +
I've never contributed to BattleTech Wiki before but I was wondering about perhaps doing so. I've actually had about a dozen BattleTech articles published over the years in magazines like BattleTechnology and MechForce Quarterly. I am also the original creator for the non-jump capable WarShips called Monitors.
 +
What I am interested in doing is submitting a wiki for a mercenary unit that I created and was featured in several of the articles published in Battletechnology and MechForce Quarterly. The unit is called TekTeam Technical Services and is essentially a unit of mercenary technicians that sell their services to the highest bidder, travels in a modified Mule class DropShip set up as a mobile repair base and is supported by a small security force.
 +
Would it be have to be published in the non-canon units section, or because it was published in the 'official' magazines for BattleTech at that time, would you consider the unit at least quasi-'canon'?
 +
I would probably need some assistance in figuring out how to use your templates for an article on TekTeam Technical Services as well. Thanks.

Question

Hey Rev - Wanted to know when the Superior Article Awards would go up. Thanks! ClanWolverine101 08:11, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

I try to put one out every month, and I still 'owe' one for July, so Superior Article' should go live in September (hopefully at the beginning). --Revanche (talk|contribs) 11:12, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! ClanWolverine101 07:11, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Article Review : Ninyu Kerai Indrahar

Rev - Whenever you get a chance to give him a look-see. :) ClanWolverine101 07:12, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

CW, I DO want to read the article, but life has been busier than anticipated this summer (I had truly thought my being away from the family for the summer was going to open up plenty of hours to do my own writing here). I'm not ignoring it. Hopefully, I'll be back in some regular capacity in the next few days. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 12:44, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
NP. Hope life settles down. ClanWolverine101 18:04, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Clan Space Maps

Hi Rev, hope you feeling better. Been while since i spoke with you. I have question/request. I have been recently doving into my files that could help update the Clan planet data. I've noticed some of the planets have maps. Is there way to lighten up the picture little? The black circle around the partical planet, like Albion is bit dark. Sorry to bother you. -- Wrangler 17:44, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

I definitely agree with you. And clicking on the larger image is only marginally better. Unfortunately, I have no PS skills and I'd be doubtful that image could be cleaned up by much. Without saying too much, I do believe we may be getting a new mapping source within a few months. Cross your fingers. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 12:45, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Alrighty, I can ask around among newer people if they could assist. Some provided enhancement to recent Operation: Ice Storm page, so it could be something the person can look in to until you find something. -- Wrangler 03:47, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Possible Problems with Sarna

Hi, Rev. I wanted report possible malware, but i don't want to sound like an alarmist. I left e-mail to Nicj as well, but until i started blocking it the ware was trying connect. What it is that when i was editing Sarna page. My browser was trying to connect to a weird website. This was from two differient computers. (http://contenlinks.netseer.com) Other Network computer i was using, the ones i have are old and dated so their slow. I clean out my cache as much as i can used virual scanners try get at what was reporting it. However, it wasn't until i wrote down the website used browser block sites option turn on. So I've blocked this website with my browsers. However, i'm wanted warn someone that there could possibly be something embedded in the Sarna's software reporting what were doing. — The preceding unsigned comment was posted by Wrangler (talkcontribs) 23 July 2010.

You're 100% certain that it was only when you were on Sarna? This didn't happen on any other websites? I understand you used a virus scanner on your computers, but maybe it's something new that they don't know to scan for? The link you provided is dead, so I can't imagine it's purpose. --Scaletail 22:56, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, It was on two seperate computers not related to each other. It only happened notice it when i was editing the wiki-page. No other place seem i was accessing it wIt looks like its reporting on what i was typing. I've successfully blocked it using my IE browser blocking site function. I work at third location i access the site is part of a network and its has mighty Network protection so its not happening there. Way to tell its doing it, is the stupid malware keep trying access the site i described above during editing of webpage. I believe i won't not noticed it if wasn't for fact i have crappy connection or i won't not have noticed it. -- Wrangler 13:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Attack of the 'Bots? Related to above

I see about 20 "new users" that suddenly have their talk page with the standard "Welcome" from Rev. No histories besides Rev's banner. They look like Bot programs to me. This may be related to the issue above. Thoughts? ClanWolverine101 02:25, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Did you check their contributions?
When I'm active on a daily basis, I try and welcome new IPs. But, when I'm gone for a while, I go back and hit the ones that got missed by everyone, just in case someone new comes back and likes to see they've been acknowledged. So, yeah, it was me that posted those and they had all made contributions within the last 25 days or so.
As for the above problem, I'm not at all convinced it is not redirection software that beat Wrangler's anti-virus efforts. So far, he's the only person that reported those incidents. I think Scaletail's response pretty much summed it up. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 11:42, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, when I checked, it looked like none of them had any contributions. Maybe I looked in the wrong place? It looked weird, about 20 accounts in a row, all just IPs, all with your "Welcome" update. If its no big deal, then no matter. ClanWolverine101 19:11, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't think the bots have anything to do what my problem was. I hope was just my broweser. I just thought strange, i did extensive viral scans before it came up. My computer connections are crap at two locations, so i noticed something uploading while i was editing wiki-pages on sarna. I don't think anyone would noticed, but a quick loading while editing. -- Wrangler 13:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm pretty tight with my ZoneAlarm, and I haven't had similar problems. I might have suggested it was with the Google ads Nic subcribes to, but since I know you're logged in, that wouldn't be it. I'd be suspicious of that explanation, anyhow. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 14:42, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm currently on the Network, so my issues with malware isn't apparent. Its in the Easter Evening hours is when i'm on lesser capable computers. -- Wrangler 17:40, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Speaking of Vandalism, Lemur, newly created user just did some advertisment vandalism to Essay: Combat DropShips 101‎. Is there a place where you would log vandalism? -- Wrangler 18:01, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Probably just the Ask the Admin page. However, thanks for reverting it. Mbear took care of our cheap advertiser. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 03:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Thomas Hogarth article deletion

Hi Rev, I need to voice my opinion here: I feel uncomfortable about how you deleted the article and placed a veiled vandalism accusation on the IP's talk page. I saw the article and noted it down for further reference as it needed a rework; I definitely agree that it wasn't up to BTW standards. But instead of vandalism I felt the article had a tongue-in-cheek attitude and should have been moved (to a normal spelling) and edited to comply with our established format. Deleting it, I feel, was over the top. We've really seen worse articles here from contributors who went on to become valuable members of the BTW community. Oh, and we certainly do need an article about Thomas Hogarth here, seeing how he evolved into a fan meme - he's definitely important to the present-day BT community. Frabby 12:35, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Frabby - for my own 2 cents - I can see it either way. It was obviously no minor cleanup job. Literally, you'd have to rewrite the entire thing. I'm all for properly encouraging new editors, but under those circumstances, I question the value of leaving it up. ClanWolverine101 13:46, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Frabby, I didn't see any attempt to add value. The article clearly (to me) was not intended to be informative. The writer did show writing skill, so it seemed like an advance form of graffiti. I acknowledge I came close to going overboard and writing a little rant, but I reined myself in and went with a template. I didn't think it was worthy of a lvl 1 (i.e., a first timer's wiki test masquerading as vandalism), but didn't think it needed the both barrels of a level 3 warning.
As for deleting it, I would not want it to be repeated with other articles we are 'missing' on notable subjects, and was concerned that keeping it just suggested acceptance of such attempts at editorial humor. I also felt the cleanup tag, especially in light of no description of what needed cleaning, only suggested it was not up to the formatting, referencing and similar other issues other so-tagged articles have. It needed to be cleaned up immediately, if it were to be kept or at the least have a step-by-step description of what needed to be fixed and added. As there was no {{inuse}} tag placed, I felt it was abandoned by all, would serve as a signpost towards the wrong direction and I knew I could not take the time to write an article of any value to replace it myself.
I respectfully think we may just have to agree to disagree, Frabby. However, I will consider bringing your attention to such similar...acts in the future, to allow you to address the problem. Good cop, bad cop. ;-) --Revanche (talk|contribs) 03:22, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I can see where you were coming from. Mind you, it felt like an overreaction at first glance and that was the gut feeling I went by because I feared it would leave a bad impression of BTW for a first-time editor. In the end, shame on BTW for not having an article on TH earlier, before someone went and created one.
Incidentially, it seems the fist "draft" of the article was a simple copy & paste of the first answer/second post in this tread of the CBT forum. Frabby 20:40, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Clan Wolverine

The Clan Wolverine article history said that it was imported in December 2006, but it wasn't imported from Wikipedia. Where did it come from? --Scaletail 23:03, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

It says Clans (BattleTech). But maybe I'm missing your point? --Revanche (talk|contribs) 03:05, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Nope. I just missed it. I saw that the text wasn't original and didn't see that the proper template had already been applied. --Scaletail 23:38, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Question : On a related note, how much editing do we need to do to an article before we can drop the wikipedia tag? ClanWolverine101 01:17, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't see why it should be dropped. --Scaletail 01:28, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Agree. The link to the original article will demonstrate how the article has changed from the original and, frankly, forked from the equivalent WP article. Its just a way of covering our bases, to show we aren't re-creating and depending whole-cloth on articles from other sources, but using them only from which to develop ourselves. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 13:46, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh, if you like. Personally, I prefer to rewrite them and then purge the wikipedia tags to show we're not depending on that for our stuff. After all, should any credible encyclopedia rely on information anyone can edit? ;) ClanWolverine101 06:05, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Michi Noketsuna

Michi Noketsuna is up. More red-links, perhaps, then would be ideal, but I feel they're all relevant. Personally, I think this is my best effort thus far, but as always I welcome feedback. ClanWolverine101 04:32, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Problems with source articles for Manufactures

Hello Rev, i've got this article Aerospace Plant CM-T72673‎, which basicly is basing its existing on fluff i can't find. TRO: 3055 Update & Revised do not support that this factory even exists or that this clan produces it on this world. Doneve produced this article, but i'm not sure if he was rushing or using a differient language TRO that say something differient. I have the PDF both original and Update TROs. He citing the revised and update. The Update doesn't say the aircraft are remotely related to Fire Mandrill, other one of fighter uses the ship. Jagatai is a old Clan Wolf fighter, which they continue to be exclusive producers of it on Eden. Other fighter is Ghost Bear fighter thats build by various folks, but Upgrade TRO does not name factory itself or where. I've run into this another clan related manufacturing plant, Doneve written. I have problems communicating with him, can you talk to him about this? -- Wrangler 15:29, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Rev, i spoke with Doneve. He apparently used Objective Raids: 3067 as his source for his clan manufacturing listings. He said i can edit what i have to out of them. I'm going have go through all those manufacturing articles, he made for the Clans see what actual has a source or note. *sigh* -- Wrangler 19:32, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Still working on problem, side tracked by projects i'm working -- Wrangler 01:08, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Welcome Back!

Hi Rev, was wondering how you were doing. Nice see you on the board again. -- Wrangler 01:08, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Nice to see you back :).--Doneve 08:22, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Indeed. Good to hear from you again! :) Frabby 09:44, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, all. I'm still really busy and 'recovering' from a series of home technology failures. I also hope to find my notes on Jihad Turning Points: Luthien I left off so many months ago; a lot of good material there to add. I really want to start writing again. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 11:41, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Talk

Hy Rev, i know you left us a little time, what is your mention about my Garrisoning Military Force Project on the Planet Pages, i hope you like it ;O..., i want to start in the next future my work in progress project, to bring all Planetary project up to date with owner history, new corrected planet images with help full fluff by Oystein Tvedten works, NicJ make a little bit mess about coordinates etc. etc...i am in work, before i started i poste a example to you and Frabby (our planet honk);=, then again nice to see you back. Greetings --Doneve 19:55, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Doneve. No slight on your efforts, but I'm still a bit of a hit & run admin right now. I DO want to review it, but don't yet have the time. Example: I used to be able to write myself while at work; now I pull 10-hour days. Keep charging, though! --Revanche (talk|contribs) 23:48, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Strange Users Names

Hi Rev, couple of strange user names just got generated. Is there thing we can tell if their bots? The names are; Oxebydy & Uxewynefowi. -- Wrangler 22:50, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

No way that I'm aware of. It is usually an attempt to see if the registration process is defeat-able (it is, of course) and to hide spam attempts, since the person is registered. Best idea, when you're spam patrolling, is keep an eye out for edits made by strangely-named accounts and take action then. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 23:49, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Looks a Spam poster just did just that after i logged off. Doneve blanked the page. I've moved to have it deleted. I'm not sure what template i'm suppose to use for a random act of spamming. The person may not come back. Their name is Tz6524199 -- Wrangler 10:47, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
I check BTW almost daily for Spammers. When I see one, here's what I do: Block the SpamBot, delete user page & user talk page, and delete/revert any edits he made. I don't think it is neccessary to wipe their edits or insert deletion tags; I'd prefer if these articles would not be edited at all prior to deletion (I'm not a programming geek at all, but I think the spammed pages may be monitored for traffic and editing them probably just makes them more interesting for a spambot machine). Frabby 11:12, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Tnx and I need your opinion

1st Tnx for the evidence for the danger of the delation of my upload.

2nd Which is the best way to show the weapons and their equivalent in the cbt without the fear of a copy => plagarism? I will show also the different ordonance type and ammunitions for the sidesarms / normal weapons. 18:54, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Doneve.
Sarna places the legality of an image upon the uploader, in the sense that you take legal responsibilities for ensuring the image is being used correctly. Per the 'copyright' you've included with each image: "The individual who uploaded this work and first used it in an article, and subsequent persons who place it into articles assert that this qualifies as fair use of the material under United States copyright law." In other words, you are claiming that you are using it correctly; this supposedly keeps Sarna from taking the legal and financial burden of improper use.
If you're asking how we can best show the images (if there are no ready articles for them), I'd recommend creating a gallery of the images, with the name of each image displayed. It appears you've assisted in plenty of those. These galleries serve as important showcases for available imagery for writers to use. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 19:02, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Hy Rev, Neuling post this on your talk page. It was a unsigned post from him ;).--Doneve 19:09, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Ugh...yep...sorry, Doneve. Definitely would not have happened if it had been signed. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 22:39, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Non-canon [images] of Terran Hegemony

Hi Rev, i'm trying fix a slight problem. Someone uploaded a non-canon [image] of the Terran Hegemony Map. There no label stating it is fan-made and not a product of canon source. Does anyone know what [we're] [supposed] to do about this? I've not [dealt] with a direct png image before. Usually these things have page that gives direction of the [image]. Someone thought the [image] uploaded was canon. Someone found it while trying make point about Hegemony, i think i've seen this [image] before in a non-canon FanMade PDF. -- Wrangler 02:37, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Wrangler.
This request looks similar to one that was posted on the Admin Request page, but was placed in the 'completed' section. The 'completed' sboutnd similar problems. You'll probably want to move it up or 'close' out the problem with what I write about here.
As for your problem: in the Template gallery you'll find a tag for non-canon products. This can be slapped onto the page for that image file. That same page will also tell you what articles make use of the picture. Remove the link to the image on each of the articles, and we'll be good to go; eventually, when the image files are reviewed for unused links, an Admin will delete it as unused (unless someone then uses it in a fanon article).
Hope this helps. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 11:34, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi Rev, I apologize for the sloppiness. The problem is not complete. I've moved this directly correct section. The *.png [image] from what i've seen of it can not be "tagged". Its a pure [image]. I'm not that good [at] navigating the picture achives where [images] do not show up in a category form, thus [are] unsearchable, [at] least to me. -- Wrangler 12:28, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
It's all right. Sometimes I have to fix the missing or incorrect statements in your writings so I can understand the problem (or intended statement). I often read and re-read both my works and others, to make sure I understand the intent.
As for your response, the proper course of action would appear to remove the link from any articles it appears. Once it is not used, upkeep of images will show it is not a valued image and result in its deletion. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 18:55, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Other Non-canon imagines

Hi Rev, sorry keep babbling like this, but some maps Neuling uploaded were from Columbus Cartographic Services. I realize that he became a Battletech freelancer, but i don't believe his work on website was considered canon. Should i put non-canon templates on those [images]? You can find what i'm talking about on Category: Maps Gallery. -- Wrangler 02:44, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Sounds like you figured out the solution before I chimed in. Wish I had read this statement before answering the first. Yep: that sounds like the right path. Just be sure to use the non-canon product tag.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 11:36, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Minor Blakist Commanders

Hi Rev, how come your making articles for characters who have almost no background on them? Would it not be more ecomical to have a list of them in a single article page with their names list in row with what didbit of information on them listed besided them like how we have List of minor mercenary units? -- Wrangler 20:14, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

I have never subscribed to the list idea, though I understand the arguments for it. I just believe there should be one standard for all similar subjects to reduce the opportunity for error or duplicated efforts. That is a primary reason we don't have a policy requiring one over the other. Also, the reason I did so in these cases is because they are a part of Project Unfinished Book and since that is a page-by-page research project (vice a comprehensive subject search), there is no telling if or what new info will come available as I progress thru Jihad Turning Points: Luthien. This allows UBP researchers to work off of one shared article.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 23:13, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Use of Fan-made images

Hi, Rev. I had question regarding the issue with Neuling about his images posted. Some of them i believe he produced (example File:Operation rat.png), but he did not originally add imagine summary. He has this particular imagine in the Fourth Succession War article. Should the fan-made imagine be used? I've slap a fanom template on it so people know this is fan-made. However, question remains should it be used in canon article. In past, i've worked with Neuling colorize a canon pictures show border differiences. I've noted those pictures were modified. However, with recent events i'm wondering where this fall under the policy. I am torn, since i'm not sure the fanom template would be properate for modified canon images. Their useful show stuff that wasn't highlighted by original company, but i'm not sure what should be done about it. At moment, i've left the above mentioned operation rat.png in place, with fanom template on it. -- Wrangler 23:51, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

I've gotta ask: why do you keep writing "imagines" instead of "images"?
Also, why do you think they are fan-produced? Did Neuling say he made them?--Revanche (talk|contribs) 00:04, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
(sigh) I'm sorry, its a grammer-blind habit i have of misspelling things okay? Images he produced has no source. I have extensive collection of Battletech material, including the maps. I've not seen a modern imagine quite like that one, he has for Operation Rat. If its a canon image, from some obscure Battlecorp release or something, he needs clarifed the source of it. -- Wrangler 00:21, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Can you please provide the link where he and you discussed this? I want to understand the context of his response before I decide on a course of action. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 00:24, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
File:Operation rat.png -- Wrangler 01:41, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Wrangler: talk with Neuling about this. If he says its official, get the details and correct it. If he says its modified (other than cropped), remind him once again that non-official material has no place in official articles (I'm this close to calling for the ban of all fanon materials with a mass deletion). If he doesn't respond to you (within a reasonable amount of time), remove the image from the article and mark it for deletion review. Hope that helps. (Back to writing my own stuff now.)--Revanche (talk|contribs) 02:15, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi Rev. He hasn't responded to any my inquiries about the png yet. He just posted new page about Clan Territory Wars File:Clanhomeworlds.png. -- Wrangler 19:37, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I'm on it.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 20:26, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. I searched and think about the png a lot of but I doesn't find my original source. Bad for me I know. I will find another canon map of the homeworld. --Neuling 21:13, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
There are plenty of official ones that can be found in the official products.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 23:49, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Martial arts + organized crime

I know it is strange first I doesn't reponded to your messages and now I call for support. Please forgive my. Now to my projects. 1st I find it interesting to read about martial arts in Classicbattletech Companion, but where it this stuff is best posted. The same with criminal organization. Any response is welcome. Neuling 21:13, 24 November 2010 (UTC) I think its probably fine to post articles titled after the subject you want to report about. However, make sure the material is focused on the BattleTech sources (such as Classic BattleTech Companion), rather than on real-world sources (like Wikipedia).--Revanche (talk|contribs) 23:49, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Tnx for your quick response. I used only the matertial from Classic BattleTech Companion which is very detailed. Under which category is it best posted.

There are a lot to choose from at Special:Categories, so look there first. If we don't have crime or martial arts ones, then use Category:Miscellaneous.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 08:55, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Awards Project

Holla Rev, i hope allways is fine with you, ähm i have a question about your wiki awards project, you work on it ??, you have lay down it??, or you have not the time to finish it, ok i know reall life is busy, i like the project and i hope you keep it up in next time. Greetings--Doneve 23:40, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Question

Hello Rev, i Hope you New Years was good to you. I had question regarding Mechs that are partially under the moratorium. I recently added the Peacekeeper to the Sarna. TRO 3085 is not longer under the moratorium, but its record sheet unabridge pdf is. Is the bibliography not allow to show upcoming and connected materials in a article? I did not (not come out yet.) added anything from that source, only listing as a part of bilo. Does this mean it must be on hold until all the related materials comes out of the mortatorium? -- Wrangler 23:13, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Rev, i jump in, i put the talk from Wrangler to Me in the discussion, to give you howe is the goal for it.--Doneve 23:27, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Doneve. I am confused why you removed the RS:3085 Cutting the Edge wikilink from article. There was no information in the article violate the moratorium period. I don't believe mentioning the Record Sheet book would break moratorium if listed in the bibliography. --Wrangler

I think, we don't put publications as biblio link, there have not the moratorium expired, some people where confused about this, it is my mention, but it is a good goal to start a discussion about this, thanks.--Doneve

Hy Rev, i think we don't put linked sources to an article there can have no content from the source, then the source falls under the moratorium, [NO CONTENT] no link in the bibliography section, thanks.--Doneve 23:50, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Would it be have to be published in the non-canon units section, or because it was published in the 'official' magazines for BattleTech at that time, would you consider the unit at least quasi-'canon'?
I would probably need some assistance in figuring out how to use your templates for an article on TekTeam Technical Services as well. Thanks.
