Verna LeMann (b. ???? - d. 5 April 3028?) was a light cavalry officer from the Federated Suns planet of Royal. She was commander of the Royal Grays militia unit when a Kuritan strike force landed on Royal in April 3028.

Overview

A Night on the Town

Two days before the Kuritans arrived, Verna was in the capitol of Royal when she was mugged by three street thugs. With the help of MechWarrior John Lee, she fought them off and she accepted his offer of dinner.

She told Lee that she was a local, who had been off-world but had come home to look after her younger brother after their parents had been killed in a Kuritan attack. Their conversation moved on to BattleMechs and cavalry forces, and Lee related what he thought was an amusing story about his kicking a Skulker around in his 'Mech. Verna rounded on him in anger, especially upset at his assumptions that MechWarriors were far superior to any other soldiers. Before Lee could apologize, she walked out on him.

You think you've cornered the market on battle prowess or something?

An Awkward Reunion

Verna LeMann encountered John Lee again, during the retreat of Royal's militia garrison in the face of Kuritan BattleMechs. As "Captain LeMann", she was leader of the Royal Grays, a mixed force of light armor... and the very kind of "pretend soldier" that Lee despised.

After Lee's commanding officer, the head of the mercenary MacKenzie's Marauders, refused to follow an order from General Howard Martell to engage a Kuritan 'Mech force that outnumbered his command three-to-one, Martell turned to Verna LeMann. He ordered her to take her light tanks and hold off the Kuritans to cover the retreating militia.

Knowing that following Martell's orders would be suicidal, Verna tried to object. Martell threatened to have her shot "as a coward". She had no option but to carry out Martell's commands, and took the Royal Grays into combat with the approaching BattleMechs.

The Truth About Verna

In the wake of the battle, John Lee learned from a refugee that Verna LeMann had once been a highly-regarded MechWarrior in the AFFS. She had even been awarded a medal by Hanse Davion for her heroism. She had resigned her commission and given up her Archer to come home to Royal after her parents were killed. She joined the planetary militia as a cavalry officer, helping to organize the Royal Greys.
