Wan Lau's family suffered from the shame of an ancestor, Huang Lau, whose failure at the controls of his Tian-zong during an important battle following the Word of Blake Jihad, cost many Capellan lives. Denied an opportunity to restore their family honor by the age of peace before the Blackout.
While Wan Lau had been a trusted Capellan MechWarrior for many years, he embraced the increase in combat during the Dark Age, to make good the dishonor of his family.[1]

Lau was known to have piloted a SHY-B1-H Shen Yi BattleMech named Breath of Fire.[1]
