History

All that is confirmed known about Zarantha Calderon is that in 3017 her son Thomas Calderon succeeded her as Protector of the Taurian Concordat. [1] She is briefly mentioned as supporting the Far Looker movement with hefty tax breaks as far back as 2990. [2]

Thomas’ predecessor, Zarantha Calderon, had expanded Taurian holdings through stepped-up colonization efforts, financed by a public-private partnership between the national government and the Far Lookers. This increasingly influential sect used numerous tax breaks and other subsidies to colonize several planetary systems rimward of the Inner Sphere between 2990 and 3020. Many of the colonies failed, but enough succeeded to give the Taurian economy a mild boost through discovery of new resources. More widespread benefi ts came to the industries involved in Far Looker projects, which included everything from exploratory missions to planetary settlement to the construction of high-tech space habitats in the Hyades Cluster. Shipbuilders, zero-g construction firms, terraforming concerns and a host of companies involved in supplying colonists with everything from foodstuffs to mining equipment to pre-fab building materials all made healthy profits over several decades. Intent on protecting their investments, various subgroups of the Far Lookers entered government at several levels throughout the early 31st century. Political winds could change along with the occupant of the throne, but space colonization took generations to fully accomplish. In order to achieve their goals, the Far Lookers needed funding that would last beyond Zarantha Calderon and into the foreseeable future. [3]

Notes

Some few inferrences can be deduced about Zarantha. Thomas was 36 years old when he succeeded his mother; she would have had to still be able to bear children for his birth to occur, giving us a rough estimate of her birth, somewhere around 2960 or a bit later. She could not be Ignatius Calderon's child as he was Protector in the late 2800's. Because of the information about Brenda Calderon in Field Manual: Periphery indicates Brenda was distant kin to Thomas Calderon, not a sister, it is probable that Zarantha had at least uncles/aunts.
