Inspired by the blatant deficiencies in older Free Worlds' League fleet vessels, such as the Eagle Frigate and Agamemnon Heavy Cruisers (known to crews an opponents alike as the "suicide box,") the Atlantis Battleships were designed on the heavily fortified hull of the very supercarriers they were intended to escort.
Put into rapid production in the late 3070s and early 3080s, the Atlantis is the most common heavy warship in Four Powers Alliance fleets at the end of the 31st Century. Now classified as a "Light" or "Second-Class" Battleship, it nevertheless joins battle-lines alongside heavier and more capable vessels and essentially forms the capital backbone of the modern FPA fleet.
==Capabilities:== Despite its considerably lower mass, the Atlantis-class Battleship can claim offensive and defensive capabilities to rival any of the older Battleships deployed by the navies of the Inner Sphere and Clans. Defensive capability is provided by a slight modification of the original Thera Project hull, with a slightly up-armored broadside and much-reduced fighter bay. These two factors provide the vessel with both stronger armor plating and a more resilient hull than relics like the Texas, or even relatively modern vessels like the Clan Snow Raven Nightlord.
Offensive capability is provided by an all-new armament, centered around forty Capellan-produced Heavy Naval Particle Cannons. This superlative system replaced a massive battery of heavy naval lasers in the initial design, easing the load on the ship's fire-control systems considerably, and boosting its firepower well into the battleship range. Augmenting this primary battery is a secondary battery comprised of six Heavy Naval Gauss Cannons. Despite their limited ammunition capacity, these massive weapons can penetrate all but the thickest armor plate, devastating lighter naval vessels.
A reworked defensive armament further eases fire-control loading by using multipurpose AR-10 Naval Missile launchers as the core of the system. These twelve versatile launchers can accept any of the many naval missile types now produced in the FPA, reducing the need for manufacturing standardization across four very diverse star-nations. Also of note, though the FPA admits to no such capability, is the implicit nuclear capability of these systems.
Eight Capital Screen Launchers provide limited defense against long-range fire and incidental anti-strikecraft capability, and are further aided by a small battery of light gauss rifles, various 8cm laser cannons, and an impressive battery of 30mm phalanx guns.
Though strike-craft capacity was reduced, Atlantis-class Battleships host two full wings of aerospace craft, as well as the same spacious small-craft bay found on other Thera-project vessels, and retain the capability to transport four Dropships through hyperspace.
Though the ship is somewhat lacking in cargo capacity, it is not especially noted for this deficiency, as the large aerospace wings deployed by the Santorini (Thera) Class carriers consume considerably more of its more generous cargo volume.
==Battle History:== Produced in an era of relative peace, these vessels have never faced another Battleship in action. Though the FPA United Admiralty is said to remain confident of the vessel's battle-line capability, our analysts have mixed opinions of the vessel's ability to challenge Star League classes.
==Variants:== Though early vessels were produced with a more robust fire-control system and a large battery of naval lasers, all of these are believed to have been upgraded with the new particle cannons as of 3085.

I see the Atlantis as more of an historical footnote. Though it's a fine ship, it was already outclassed by other nations' battleships when it debuted. At this point in its history, the FWL is far less interested in large capital warships than in using large groups of fighter craft to destroy them. It sees the super-carrier, not the Battleship, as the power-vessel of the future.
Thanks for the kind words. I put a lot of effort into the fluff for my ships, and I'm always glad when someone enjoys it.
