Beginning in 3051, the Order of the Five Pillars (O5P) was ordered to gather intelligence regarding the capabilities of the Clans' most powerful Battleships. Because the Draconis Combine itself was being assaulted by the Smoke Jaguar and Ghost Bear Clans, their attention naturally fixed on the two most powerful ships in those Clans' Fleets: Clan Ghost Bear's Nightlord-Class Ursa Major, and a Smoke Jaguar ship that O5P believed was of the same class.
The information gathered by O5P was sketchy, wildly inaccurate, and often based on worst-case scenarios rather than real observation, with the result that the vessel to be constructed by Project Yamato would be far more powerful than the Clan Battleships it was meant to be copying.
Laid down in 3053, the Yamato Battleship would be delayed by technical difficulty, bureacratic meddling, and the basic inability of the DCA to build a 1.5 megaton Battleship. One significant delay was even directly caused by House Kurita's Internal Security Force (ISF,) which assassinated a senior technician in 3057, halting work on the vessel's superstructure until a replacement could be trained.
An entire shipbuilding industry grew around the massive vessel, converting New Samarkand into one of the Inner Sphere's finest warship yards, but as the vessel suffered setback after setback, the date became 3059, then 3060, then 3061.
The vessel was launched in 3063. Christened DCS Musashi, it was so plagued with technical difficulties that its shakedown cruise was cut short at three months -- in that time, the crew had reported over twelve thousand technical issues, and over forty crew members had been killed, including the vessel's captain.
Funding for the project was cancelled and the vessel was put into mothballs. Every attempt by the DCA to revive the project was rebuffed by the Coordinator until after the Jade Falcon War of 3067, where the Siege of Tukayyid definitively demonstrated the strategic value of such a powerful vessel.
Beginning in 3068, Nova Cat technicians were brought in to examine the Yamato's systems, and they corrected many significant faults, but when the vessel was launched on another abortive shakedown cruise in 3071, it was discovered that the mighty Musashi's power grid was unable to simultaneously accomodate its main battery, main drive, and sensor systems. In fact, only one could be used at a time.
Nova Cat technicians, unable to overcome this difficulty, as their expertise was not in Battleship systems, called on Star League allies Clans Ghost Bear and Snow Raven to assist in the project's completion. The remaining technical issues were quickly resolved and DCS Musashi entered service in 3073. Musashi would be followed by Nagato (3077), Matsu (3081), Yamashiro (3082) and Owari (3085).
No further Yamato-class vessels are planned, the DCA having abandoned the Battleship class for the Amaterasu class Dreadnought.
==Capabilities:== Designed to compete with a class of ships that never existed, the Musashi, when finally completed, easily outstripped both of its parent designs in terms of both armor and armament. Musashi carries 66% more armor than the Nightlord, with reinforced broadside plate like a Texas. It also manages to pack a more potent version of both vessels armament into what is essentially an enlarged Nightlord frame.
Musashi's most numerous weapons are 56 55cm Naval Laser Cannons, both arrayed along its broadside and scattered forward and aft of the main battery, they provide a level of firepower rarely seen in naval-laser systems.
Twenty-two class-30 Naval Autocannons provide Musashi's primary long-range firepower, making it competitive with such revered names as the Black Lion class Battlecruisers and the Aegis Heavy Cruisers.
Additional fire-support is provided by twenty heavy naval particle cannons, turreted forward and aft of the vessel's broadside, and eight Heavy Naval Gauss Cannons, evenly spaced across the vessel's massive hull.
Twelve AR-10 launchers provide versatile missile support in full coverage, with fire converging on the broadsides, while several anti-missile cannons were added to the original design during the 3068-3071 overhaul and provide a capable defense against hostile missile systems.
Copied from the Nightlord, the Musashi's anti-fighter systems are inadequate at best. Consequently, the DCA is always sure that a Kaga-class fighter carrier is paired with any Yamato-Class vessel near hostile territory.
A Ghost Bear-designed power-distribution system gives the Musashi the ability to fire its weapons continuously. In turn, the Musashi's capabilities have made the Snow Ravens and Ghost Bears reexamine their own Nightlord-class vessels.
In terms of auxillary craft, the Yamato Project vessels are adequately fitted, carrying a full DCA fighter wing, sixteen small craft, and six dropships. A lithium-fusion battery provides standard strategic mobility.
==Battle History:== Too late for the Jade Falcon War, and too terrible for any lesser power to engage, the Yamato Battleships remain untested in battle, though growing tensions with the Four Powers Alliance may soon result in a shooting war.
==Variants:== There are two subclasses of the Yamato Class. Nagato and Musashi are built along the basic hull plan, while Matsu, Yamashiro, and Owari add several anti-fighter systems.
==Notable Vessels & Crews:== Musashi (New Samarkand,3073) Nagato (New Samarkand, 3077) Matsu (New Samarkand, 3081) Yamashiro (Dieron, 3082) Owari (Luthien, 3085)
==Deployment== Musashi-Class Battleships rarely keep a constant station, instead showing the flag in the Combine's most remote systems. Two vessels, Nagato and Yamashiro, are assigned to permanent duty with the SLDF Navy.

It is certainly different from other battleships. The use of so many naval lasers as the main armament is interesting.
A mass of naval lasers works well with the new anti-fighter naval laser mode and bracketing fire rules of Strategic Operations.
Quote:
I like that you used NACs other than the /40.
NAC/40s stink in any case. You can only fit one in each weapons bay because of the 70pt bay limit. You can mix them with other NACs to get to the 70pt limit, but that creates a weapons bay with damage that changes over range. Also, their "medium" range prevents them from being used for orbital bombardment. And small numbers of large guns work poorly with the new bracketing fire rules.
Before Strategic Operations, NAC/30s were an optimum weapon. They had the best firepower-per-ton of any non-missile capital weapon with "Long" or better ranges, and were only slightly less efficient than the NAC/35 and NAC/40. You could fit two in each weapons bay and they could perform orbital bombardment.

The anti-fighter armament seems like an afterthought, but 36 fighters and the sixdropships in addition to support vessels should make short work of any fighters.
I suspect Bob was giving a nod toward canon. Canon designs always skimp on anti-fighter weaponry. Also, capital weapons shouldn't be ignored for their anti-fighter capabilities. +5 to-hit fighters is rough, but when you're bringing a whole broadside to bear against a squadron and only need one weapons bay to gut the squadron....

Holy late discussion Batman!
Okay, The Yamato/Musashi is a pretty simple mash-up between the Nightlord and the Texas, thus combining the features of both with a few of my signature design choices.
36 fighters is a standard DCA fighter "wing," and it's one of the larger compliments carried aboard a line battleship. What's even cooler is that those big laser bays can now be used in an anti-fighter mode under SO rules. I haven't tried it out, but I think it might just give laser-beasts like this thing new power in an anti-fighter role.
in addition, capital missiles can target fighters without penalty, screen launchers can damage fighters without even hitting them, and don't underestimate heavy capital weapons in an AF role. You'd be surprised how often that works.
