I'm Playing in a Mercenary themed RPG game at the moment that is just about to stumble into the Fedcom Civil war. Our company has just outgrown our Leopard and I've been playing with a couple possible replacements. I'd like to hear anyone else's opinon on the viability of this refit of an old-school hull as a "next step" VTOL aerodyne.

AeroTech 2 Vessel Technical Readout
VALIDATED

Class/Model/Name: DRoST IIa (2470) Devil's Custom
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3067
Vessel Type: Aerodyne DropShip
Rules: Level 2, Standard design
Rules Set: AeroTech2
We're actually not big enough to fill it yet, even with our weird unit numbers, we have Four mechs, one heavy and three light vehicles, and about three 28 man platoons of battle armor.. We've been involved in the shadow war between the Wolf's Dragoons / Allied Mercenary Command and the Word of Blake, so we're upping base squad and mech deployment sizes to match.

As for the very heavy battle armor compliment, all of the characters in this game are actually battle armor pilots, and that is the intended unit specialization, all the other hardware is really around to supplement that.

This is a refit of the DRoST IIa 2470 upgrade (on the wiki, I can't post links to it just yet), which at least according to it's fluff is still at least relatively common, if the phrase "Innumerable Clones" holds true.

Edit: I suppose I could cut even deeper into cargo capacity and field two mech lances if I was thinking of this as a marketable product, but this is a one-off custom that I'm pretty sure we're all going to die in when someone tries to make it dogfight alongside its aerospace fighter escorts.

With the unit you are using, the ship would have to be a Star League left over, as the unit is highly unlikely to be able to afford a custom ship. This is just a common issue with smaller units in gameplay.
A refitted Triumph might be more of what you need, and might be cheaper then a custom design.
A Gazelle would probably be to small for the mechs, even in a refit.
A full scale stat sheet would be nice to help with a full evaluation of it, as the wiki doesn't really have any real detailed stats on it.
Nothing in the wiki states anything but standard armor for what it carries, which can be refitted, but it is better to see the stats before going much further,

DroSTs did not survive to Civil War era. Master Unit List indicates its only available in Periphery during Star League era, which means its already virtually extinct by the fall and it'll age another 300 years past that. Possibly a very small number of ancient DroSTs still operate somewhere out in the deep periphery (Jarnfolk, Hanseatic League, Caliphate, etc.) but not within House space where your mercenary group exists.

I think ghostrider's recommendation of a Triumph (2593 version) is your best bet. It's old enough that many of them have been one-off refits by nations and mercenary companies to better fit that outfit's needs. In fact, the Sarna article even says as it's cargo areas are highly adaptable, so refitting one to carry some mechs and battle armor platoons shouldn't be difficult. (Could probably even buy one that was most of the way there.) Triumphs don't carry fighters like the Leopard though but you didn't count any fighters among your assets anyway. It probably also can't do an orbital mech drop either, but if your unit is battle armor-oriented you probably aren't using this tactic anyhow. However, a Leopard does operate a bit better as an assault gunship: its faster and more heavily gunned than the Triumph.

The issue with the Leopard is the size. Removing the fighter bays is about the only way to fit the other things, and I don't think that is enough for the changes. But then I don't have anything beyond the standard BMR rules for such things, so it may be possible. Heavy vehicle bays can handle light vehicles in them, so that is a plus. This would run out quickly if you increase in size, especially with getting a 5th mech.

In game economics, I would suggest if you can get a second dropship, rent out the Leopard as a safe transport, for things such as delivering new units to garrison forces on safe worlds. Bring in some money without huge risks to the ship. If you don't have the funds, then there isn't much I can suggest if you don't use the Leopard.

Depending on who is running the game, finding a ship to modify is probably going to be the only way to do so. Or steal a ship from the enemy. Funds would be an issue, given the small merc set up they are at this point. Maybe they find someone with an old ship they want rid of badly, and give a good discount. Would suggest massive rebuild needed for such a scenario.
A variant of that is someone puts it up as payment for a mission or 10.
