Ok, call me old school if you want, but one thing's been bugging me ever since the original TRO 3026, and that is why on Earth there wasn't a vehicle similar to the Saladin, but packing a ac-10 instead of that monstrous 20. No variant, no nothing.

After recently getting my hands on hmvee, I decided that, as my first combat vehicle, I was going to change that.

So, ladies, and gents, I bring to you the Scythian.

Code:
          BattleTech Vehicle Technical Readout
VALIDATED

Type/Model: Scythian
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3025
Config: Hovercraft
Rules: Level 1, Standard design

Mass: 35 tons
Power Plant: 105 ConLee I.C.E.
Cruise Speed: 86.4 km/h
Maximum Speed: 129.6 km/h
Armor Type: ProTech 4 Standard
Armament:
1 SarLon MaxiCannon Autocannon/10
Manufacturer: Scarborough Ltd.
Location: Al Na'ir
Communications System: Scarborough Talky-2
Targeting & Tracking System: Scarborough Assault-1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Often billed as the fourth member of the Saladin/Saracen/Scimitar trio, the
Scythian was thought to be all but lost to history until Scarborough recently
re introduced the vehicle to it's line up.

Starting it's life as a field modification of the Saladin, which it shares
many components with, the Scythian never really caught on, and Scarborough
discontinued it's production for several years, only bringing it out in the
face of the clan threat when it became only too apparent that the Saladin was
simply too short ranged to stand a chance against these new foes, despite the
power of it's fearsome main gun.

==Capabilities:==
Sharing virtually all it's components with it's better known half sibling, the
Scythian looks identical to the Saladin, and is indeed often mistaken for it,
until you take a closer look at the main gun, which is also it's only
weaponry.

This is not the Saladin's Scarborough autocannon, but a Sarlon Maxicannon,
which while it lacks the larger cannon's brutal hitting power, greatly
improves the range of the tank, which often proved a life saver to it's
crews.

The three tons of much needed armor added certainly didn't hurt matters any
either.

==Variants:==
The only variant that ever existed was a attempt in 3052 to improve the
Scythian by replacing it's autocannon with a lbx model.

While this did go some way to make the vehicle more usefull in modern combat,
eventually the DCMS chose not to proceed with the refit, nor with procurement
of additional vehicles to this new design.

==Deployment==
Always rarer than it's half siblings, the Scythian has now all but disappeared
again from the battlefield, as the march of technology means that it is no
longer considered a front line combat vehicle.

It is however robust, and extremely reliable, just as all the Scarborough
Industries designs are, and is unlikely to disapear completely from service,
albeit second line, any time soon.

My, God, man! It's insane! Think of the children! Why won't someone think of the children!?! It's so crazy it Just. Might. Work!

(Good fix on the Saladin, and nice find on the new S-type name.)

Thanks. It's named after a little known warrior tribe from somewhere in the Middle East area (where exactly escapes me currently, I'm sorry to say, but they were extensively used by the Persians as cavalry), so the name fits in with the ole S trio, me thinks.

What I would really like to see are some level 2 designs.
- An LBX variant with 2 tons of ammo, CASE, and an extra 1/2 ton of armor.
- A UAC/10 variant with a fusion engine, 2-3 tons of ammo, CASE, maybe another 1/2 ton of armor.

And for fun...
- A fusion engine design with 5 extra Heat sinks and an HPPC/C3 save combo.

Nice "variant" on an old theme. I was always fond of the "set" of Scarborough hovers, but the Saladin was always extremely short on armor, making it an unpopular "suicide ride" for the crews. This gives at least half the concentrated punch with a drastic increase in survivability, meaning you might even live long enough to shoot twice, or to play hit-and-run with "the big boys".

The first is pretty much what I had in mind with the (cancelled) refitted version

The second never happened, as it was back out of production before the uac-10 was invented.

And both that one, and the last one fail miserably at this vehicle single biggest selling point. It's price. 700 thousand is cheap as chips for a vehicle of this capability.

I have a untested theory on how to use it. Basically drive it like it was a tougher, and slightly slower, Savannah Master. Unlike that infamous vehicle you have the armor to take a couple of hits from real weapons, while a back shot from a ac-10 can hurt pretty much any mech in the game, if it hits, and hits the right spot.

This hovercraft would make a good raider. I like it. It should be in a TRO.
Wow, those bracing maneuvers sure do come in handy when firing proximity fused precision cluster flak ammo at a Balancer LAM. Unfortunately they make my 'Mech an immobile target for that LAM. Oh well, at least I'm getting partial cover.

Only place it'd fit is in the Succession Wars era, and I quite frankly lack the guts to submit it to Catalyst.

If someone else (other than Chip, please..I'd rather not get linked to him) would post it to them while making sure to give the designer (me) credit..
