Continued from the Various Upgraded Designs thread.
This thread examines the Inner Sphere Honor Guard's Griffin design and use from 3050 to 3081 and beyond.
History:
After suffering heavy losses and losing Gen. Alexander (the old CO) to Clan Jade Falcon forces on Coventry, the ISHG retreated to its home in Caselton to lick its wounds. On the way there, Alex's son Jonas took command, and restructured the ISHG's forces. Not relying on just one tactic to counter the Clans, Jonas wanted to support the use of Arrow IV and dedicated scout mechs with units that can strike at extreme range, but not require ammo. This has led to a unit-wide focus on mech sniping, particularly with ERPPCs, and network tactics.
For the medium mech, Jonas wanted a heavy, fast and mobile design, that was well protected and built for the ERPPC. The design that fulfilled most of these requirements was the Griffin GRF-3M, but was not fast enough. To rectify this, Jonas had the missile launcher removed and had a 330XL engine installed, along with a few other changes. Tasking some nearby manufacturers on Tikonov to help make the design, the ISHG produced the GRF-3-1 Griffin.
Below are the MegaMek condensed readouts of the designs (less redundancy and clutter).
Code:
Griffin GRF-3-1 (~3050) 55 tons IS TW non-box set
Movement: 6/9/6 Engine: 330 XL Heat Sinks: 12 [24]
Internal: 91 (Endo Steel) Armor: 185/185 (Ferro-Fibrous) HD: 3 9 CT: 18 26 ( 10) RT: 13 18 ( 8) LT: 13 18 ( 8) RA: 9 18 LA: 9 18 RL: 13 26 LL: 13 26
Medium Laser [LA] 3 Heat Medium Pulse Laser [LA] 4 Heat Medium Pulse Laser [LA] 4 Heat ER PPC [RA] 15 Heat TAG [HD] 0 Heat
Targeting Computer [RT] C3 Slave [CT]
BV: 1,706 Cost: 12,579,025 Cbills
This design served the unit well, and has not undergone any major changes until the Jihad years, when the WoB conflict and emerging technology prompted Jonas to upgrade the design. This resulted in the GRF-3-2.
During the design process, there was a crucial turning point with the advent of stealth armor. With most of the unit's pilots having high accuracy at that point, there was less of a need for network tactics, and more a need to reduce the return fire which was hurting the unit's effectiveness. Thus, the unit removed the C3 systems and heavy Targeting Computers in favor of the stealth system. Thankfully, the pilots didn't mind, and actually retained some of the networking tactics from before, despite the loss of the shared telemetry.
Code:
Griffin GRF-3-2 (~3070) 55 tons IS advanced
Movement: 6/9/6 Engine: 330 XL Heat Sinks: 14 [28] Targ Sys: Long Range Targeting
Internal: 91 (Endo Steel) Armor: 185/185 (Stealth) HD: 3 9 CT: 18 26 ( 10) RT: 13 18 ( 8) LT: 13 18 ( 8) RA: 9 18 LA: 9 18 RL: 13 26 LL: 13 26

Stealth [LL/...] Guardian ECM Suite [CT]
BV: 1,813 Cost: 13,078,125 Cbills
When the Jihad ended in 3081, the unit upgraded again with technology that builds upon the Jihad designs, resulting in very advanced designs, sporting technology such as reverse-engineered Void Sig systems, perfected Angel ECMs and CASEIIs. Below is the final ISHG Griffin design, the GRF-3-X.
Code:
Griffin GRF-3-X (~3081) 55 tons IS experimental
Movement: 6/9/6 Engine: 330 XL Heat Sinks: 15 [30] Gyro: Compact Gyro Targ Sys: Long Range Targeting
Internal: 91 (Composite) Armor: 185/185 (Ferro-Fibrous) HD: 3 9 CT: 18 26 ( 10) RT: 13 18 ( 8) LT: 13 18 ( 8) RA: 9 18 LA: 9 18 RL: 13 26 LL: 13 26
Medium Laser [LA] 3 Heat Medium Laser [LA] 3 Heat ER PPC [RA] 15 Heat TAG [HD] 0 Heat
Void Signature System [LL/...] Angel ECM Suite [CT]
BV: 1,698 Cost: 17,093,590 Cbills
To this day (Dark Age), the ISHG serves the Republic of the Sphere as a peacekeeping force.
More mechs to follow in separate threads.
May the discussing begin!

Your mechs do have a nice pattern of upgrades thus showing the evolution of them to higher advanced product.
This one is a decent take on the Griffin and while it does not radically change the weapon loadout, it does offer more bang for the buck.
And by the way, have the individual posts is easier to read the info you have posted.

Thanks! I do try to make the upgrades make sense and feel believable in a canon environment. All my work researching the Battletech universe for the fluff of my fanon merc unit seems to be paying off!

Errata: The Jade Falcon assault on Coventry was in 3058, IS Targeting Computers came out in 3062 at the start of the Fed Com civil war, and the ISHG's first batch upgrade wasn't until 3068 around the start of the Jihad. This means the "1" variant is a 3062 design, and the "2" variant is a 3068 design.
Guess I needed to check the history more.

Just updating this thread with my new thoughts on the GRF-3-X design. This design removes the compact gyro it previously had, exchanges a heatsink for another medium laser, shuffles some components around, and adds an AES system in the ERPPC arm to make the mech more effective at its job.

Yeah, SSW has this weird thing about dates. It lists anything from 3051-312x as Clan Invasion years.
Not much I can do about that, programwise, but I suppose I can edit it manually.

It's not. The "Era" given is based strictly off the equipment availability code given in Tech Manual. From that perspective, any time after 3050 is considered the Clan Invasion period.
So you could say that the "Equipment Era" is Clan Invasion, whereas the 'Mech's "Play Era" is Jihad.

Huh. Didn't know that. Thanks Lost.
...
I find it odd that ever since my old Dire Wolf thread, there has been more comments about related tangents than about anything concerning the design, its effectiveness, its evolution, or whether there are suitable replacements that fit the unit's alliegiance and philosophy. In fact, I'd say the Summoner thread has had the best discussion so far.
Anyway, comment if you wish.

After some playtesting, I decided to completely redesign all of my unit's mechs. Taking heat and range into consideration, these redesigns reflect the times when they were produced better than their previous incarnations.
Well enough of that, onto my designs!
Assuming my unit used the generic -3M model before 3062, the upgrade takes the -3M and creates an early version of the -6S with a C3 Slave and TAG instead of the two medium lasers.
Code:
Griffin GRF-3-2

Once the -6S came out, the ISHG wanted something to protect the light support mech a bit more with its mission, so the upgrade gives the -6S Stealth armor with a good heat regimen to follow. Unfortunately, the C3 had to be removed and the cockpit made smaller to grant enough tonnage to mount the system. Still, the pilots prefer the added safety, despite the extra precautions they have to take.

When the ISHG was able to capture and produce working Void Sigs and Angel ECMs, all the units mechs were upgraded to the max with other perfected technology to create a force that can strike virtually undetected. Unfortunately, the Jihad ended before they could be put to use against the WoB. However, they served the unit well in the years that followed.
Here is the final upgrade.

I don't think I can do too much more to this mech. But if you guys see any room for improvement, feel free to let me know.
