Continued from the Various Upgraded Designs thread.
This thread examines the Inner Sphere Honor Guard's Black Knight design and use from 3050 to 3081 and beyond.
History:
After suffering heavy losses and losing Gen. Alexander (the old CO) to Clan Jade Falcon forces on Coventry, the ISHG retreated to its home in Caselton to lick its wounds. On the way there, Alex's son Jonas took command, and restructured the ISHG's forces. Not relying on just one tactic to counter the Clans, Jonas wanted to support the use of Arrow IV and dedicated scout mechs with units that can strike at extreme range, but not require ammo. This has led to a unit-wide focus on mech sniping, particularly with ERPPCs, and network tactics.
For the heavy mech, Jonas wanted a reasonably fast and mobile design, that could house the heavy C3 computer necessary for network tactics, but was well protected and featured twin ERPPCs to back up the medium mechs. With no other mech that appealed to Jonas' eye, the chassis that looked nice was the Black Knight BL-6-KNT with its all energy weapon loadout. Tasking some nearby manufacturers on Tikonov to remove all the components and install the necessary ones, the ISHG produced the BL-6-1-KNT Black Knight.

This design served the unit well, and has not undergone any major changes until the Jihad years, when the WoB conflict and emerging technology prompted Jonas to upgrade the design. This resulted in the BL-6-2-KNT.
During the design process, there was a crucial turning point with the advent of stealth armor. With most of the unit's pilots having high accuracy at that point, there was less of a need for network tactics, and more a need to reduce the return fire which was hurting the unit's effectiveness. Thus, the unit removed the C3 systems and heavy Targeting Computers in favor of the stealth system. Thankfully, the pilots didn't mind, and actually retained some of the networking tactics from before, despite the loss of the shared telemetry.

When the Jihad ended in 3081, the unit upgraded again with technology that builds upon the Jihad designs, resulting in very advanced designs, sporting technology such as reverse-engineered Void Sig systems, perfected Angel ECMs and CASEIIs. Below is the final ISHG Black Knight design, the BL-6-X-KNT.

It is a command mech, with C3 Master, then you turned it into a line mech...interesting. I would have to use both to see how they do for me in their different roles. Overall they look really good.

Well, there had to be a mech that could fulfill the role of C3 Master mech...so since the assault mech was already taken, I chose a 75 ton heavy design that had an energy weapon focus. Plus, it didn't hurt that the mech is known for being a command mech, so I put two and two together to create my design(s).

Errata: The Jade Falcon assault on Coventry was in 3058, IS Targeting Computers came out in 3062 at the start of the Fed Com civil war, and compact gyros came out in 3068 around the start of the Jihad. This means the "1" variant is a 3062 design, and the "2" variant is a 3068 design. Also it seems this variant would be better upgraded off the BL-9-KNT since it has an XL engine and a ERPPC already.
Guess I needed to check the history more.

Just updating this thread with my new thoughts on the BL-6-X-KNT design. This design shuffles a lot of components around in order to have the right arm have both ERPPCs (keeping to the look of the design) and an AES system to make them more accurate. However, to accommodate these changes, I had to remove one medium laser.

After some playtesting, I decided to completely redesign all of my unit's mechs. Taking heat and range into consideration, these redesigns reflect the times when they were produced better than their previous incarnations.
Well enough of that, onto my designs!
Assuming my unit used the generic -9 model before 3062, the upgrade takes the -9 and radically revamps the mech to function as the forward hub for the unit's C3 network. To do this, everything was changed, from the engine, to the structure, to the armor, to the weapons. What came out was a whole new Black Knight, with two ERPPCs on its arm mount and a trio of backup ER Medium lasers in the torso. One of the Medium Pulse Lasers was kept in the head for ranged anti-infantry and battle-armor work. Jump jets round out the design to give the mech the ability to take advantage of difficult terrain.

Keeping the pattern with the rest of the unit's mechs, the next upgrade gives the mech Stealth armor. Unfortunately, the C3 Master had to be removed and the cockpit made smaller to grant enough tonnage to mount the system. To make room for the system and two additional heat sinks, the gyro had to be converted to a compact version. Lastly, one of the medium lasers was converted to a TAG to round out the upgrade.

When the ISHG was able to capture and produce working Void Sigs and Angel ECMs, all the units mechs were upgraded to the max with other perfected technology to create a force that can strike virtually undetected. Unfortunately, the Jihad ended before they could be put to use against the WoB. However, they served the unit well in the years that followed.
