--- The Levy MBT is a combat vehicle designed during the Age of War as a low-cost means of bolstering local militias and garrison forces. Although the design was woefully outdated even during the era which it was built in, it still proves to be a very popular by virtue of it's cost effectiveness. Already cheap for a 60-Ton vehicle, the armor and armaments of this machine are easy to repair and maintain, as well as being easy to fabricate or procure for replacement.

--- This alone did not ensure the longevity of the Levy however, but rather how effective it was at bolstering a local militia or garrison. Even long after the advent of the Battlemech, the humble Levy continues to be produced all throughout the Inner Sphere. It has persisted though the rise and fall of the Star League, throughout the ravages of the Succession Wars, well into the Clan Invasion, the FedComm Civil War and beyond.

--- The Levy would not only see continued production and use throughout this span, but would do so bereft of any upgrades or even any meaningful changes to it's design. And all this was due to one factor: Effectiveness. The Levy was never meant to beat a Battlemech, hell it was never built to even beat the combat vehicles of it's era, no the Levy's primary mission goal was to cheaply and reliably bolster infantry against infantry. In this role it excelled above all others.

--- Far cheaper, and with components that were stupidly easy to manufacture on site in even the most backwater of worlds, the Levy is excellent at freeing up other, better forces for battle. The Levy serves as a force multiplier, being excellent against enemy infantry, APCs and even some light vehicles well beyond the time of the Jihad. This made it appealing to just about everyone from the SLDF, the Great Houses and all the way down to even the lowliest of Mercenary units.

--- A trio of Machine Guns fed by a half ton of ammo would slaughter PBIs, and could do a huge number on even Battle Armor if enough Levy MBTs were arrayed against them. The Heavy Rifle, while outdated in every way by modern Autocannons is far cheaper, and gets the job done just fine. A 240-Rated ICE power plant propels the Levy to a respectable top speed of 64.8 km/h. Two tons of Heavy Rifle rounds keep the Levy in good supply for most engagements. Fifteen tons of Primitive Armor provide the Levy with good protection that has aged well.

nitpick: The heavy gauss came out in 3061.

The fluff is great, but inaccurate.
The gauss rifle in any vehicle sized form, is not a good weapon for anti infantry work. And it is very much a good weapon to take out vehicles and mechs. The Silver Bullet variant is the exception to this.

It looks like something that could very well become the staple of military units. The only issue that might slow this down is a lack of ammunition. Granted, anyone with access to a decent machine shop and nickel could produce this, over the more unstable ac or missile ammo. The primitive armor is a nice touch for the time.

The range is great, as 20 hexes beats out must other weapons, while the damage drop off is still remains at ppc/ac10 levels. For anything that has to get into the 9 hex range faces a 20 point hit. So ac 20 out to 13 hexes. So keeping an atlas or some such at bay, once it is out of lrms, the Levy could outrage the atlas with the same damage as the atlas's ac.

If you wanted to get this to be closer to canon, the back story could be the Po tank evolved from this when the Gauss technology was lost to manufacturers, which explains the ac 10 on the Po.

Sarna Wiki - Heavy Rifle

Smooth bore cannon on a tank, closer to real life. Not a Gauss rifle. Most likely, like my own HeavyMetal the information had to be imputed manually; hence the Heavy Rifle* with the asterisk.

Yep, Heavy Rifle not Heavy Gauss. Neither is a great anti-infantry weapon, but those three Machine Guns alongside the armor of the tank itself make it devastating to infantry and potentially even Battle Armor if you can get them in a cross fire.
