Overview: When Wolf's Dragoons appeared in the Inner Sphere they brought along Mechs that hadn't been seen for centuries and some had never been seen before. Mechs like the Annihilator impressed the LCAF to such a degree that they issued a procurement for a new assault mech with similar capabilities.
The project was assigned the codename Nemesis, though the design never received an official LCAF designation and was simply tagged as the Nemesis and retained its X-registery normally assigned to prototypes only.
Capabilities: The Annihilator was a serious challenge, Defiance Industries picked up the gauntlet and began work on modifiying an Atlas chassis. The cockpit and life support assembly came from a Zeus, while the gun arms were lifted from a Banshee.
The three prototypes were ready by 3017, and secretly field tested in the Periphery.
The Nemesis mounted a pair of PPC's and Autocannon 10 allowing enough weight to be saved to increase the speed to 54kph while mounting a very respectable 17 tons of armour. For short range work the Nemesis mounted a pair of medium lasers in the Center Torso. Fourteen heat sinks struggled hard to keep the heat gauge under control.
As Lyran industry was still struggling to produce new designs the Nemesis suffered many delays. Despite attempts by Defiance to get a lance of Nemesis operational for the offensives of 3028, none were available before the DCMS counterattacks and were withdrawn for fear the Draconic Combine might capture and copy the design.
Attempts to redesign the mech with experimental double strength heat sinks failed and the project was shelved in 3037 after only 27 Nemesis were built. These were issued to militia units as command mechs. The last remaining prototype ended up in a museum on Hesperus II
Battle History: The Nemesis saw little action over the years. One notable action was in 3068, where the prototype Nemesis "Zeta" was rushed into action to stop the attacking Blakists. The Nemesis engaged and destroyed a Blakist Grand Titan. The fight was so intense the Nemesis shut down due to overheating and it was destroyed by long range fire from a Vanquisher.
Deployment: Only a few Nemesis still exist and most were deployed in quite sectors and offered to militia commanders as a prestigious "ride"
Variants: Due to a lack of spare parts most surviving Nemesis mechs are jury rigged. A process that makes modifications nearly impossible as the systems can hardly cope with the standard configuration, let alone handle advanced technology. The only successful modification was to remove the twin PPC's and replace them with large lasers and four extra heat sinks, giving this variant a more effective heat management capability, but this causes some targeting problems at long range.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors: "Zeta", the last remaining Nemesis prototype was rushed into combat to stop the Blakists from taking the Hesperus II factories. It lasted less two hours. By the time Zeta was on the move the Blakists were regrouping for a new assault and Zeta was among a group of prototypes and refurbished desigs that took the brunt of this brutal attack. Zeta and its unknown pilot were destroyed by a second wave of Blakist mechs breaking through and opening the way to the factory.
