That's been hashed over. So what if they do? Most spheroid dropships look like the 2001: Space Odyssey lunar landers. There's only so many ways you can put landing gear on a spheroid dropship, and BT has covered most of them, and most ended up looking like Kubrick's & Clarke's landers from the 1968 movie 2001.
The Trade Federation "dropships" were in the Phantom Menace as the core of those battleships and droid command ships. Apparently, it was decided that those central spheres should be able to break free of the 3/4 ring encircling them and land. When that was decided, they ended up looking like spheroid dropships. A case of independent evolution, IMO.
