I have noticed that most people who play BattleTech that do not play the clans tend to play Mercenary troops. I have played a few times as house troops and that is pretty fun to do, more often then not though I play mercs who hire out to the Periphery primarily.

Playing as a Merc faction means you don't need to worry about higher authority, you are your own master. On the other hand, as a Merc, there's often no one to back you up if things abruptly go sour.
I'm fine with either a Merc faction, a Peripheral state army, or a "remote" House force. Major battles take too long to play out, so limiting things to company size or less makes sense from a gameplay point of view, but that would only be a "scouting action" for any serious engagement in the more heavily settled regions. Trying to move 36 Mechs or more, plus supporting forces, each turn is more than I care to deal with.

I agree, it is much easier to use company size maneuvers then Battalion sized.
