AeroTech 2 Vessel Technical Readout VALIDATED
Class/Model/Name: Montana Montana Tech: Inner Sphere / 3067 Vessel Type: WarShip Rules: Level 2, Standard design Rules Set: AeroTech2
Mass: 250,000 tons K-F Drive System: (Unknown) Length: 450 meters Power Plant: Standard Safe Thrust: 2 Maximum Thrust: 3 Armor Type: Lamellor Ferro-carbide Armament: 8 Heavy NPPC 6 NAC/20 120 Small Pulse Laser 18 AR10 Launcher ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The Montana-class Space Dominance Vehicle was built to, well, dominate space, securing the Heavens for the Good, God-Fearing People of the United States of America. God Bless America. (With the understanding this meant blasting a lot of Godless Commie Chinese Scum to Hell.)
Or such was the official mission statement for the Montana-class. In reality, the US Navy was embarrassed that the US Marine Corps had a superior combatant to anything in the Navy's inventory. The Jackson-class Transatmospheric Assault Vehicle was just supposed to be a trooper hauler fershitssake, and a battalion-level transport at that, but it out gunned, out maneuvered, and out styled anything the Navy had. Since the ongoing "Cryogenic War" with the People's Republic meant the usual response to such a threat (getting Congress to cut funding to the Marine vessel) was uncool, the Navy took the alternate, more expensive route: it built a bigger ship.
==Capabilities:== What that Jackson has, the Montana has more of. Well, the two vessels have about the same acceleration potential, but otherwise, there's no doubt the Montana has more firepower.
Whereas the Jackson has a single spinal neutron beam weapon (twin HNPPCs), the Montana has 4 (3 forward facing, 1 stern). The Jackson has a pair of bow railguns for surface bombardment and short range anti-shipping roles; the Montana has 6, including two in each broadside. This allows the Montana to bombard surface positions without going into the tactically compromised "dirt sniffing" (bow facing the planet) attitude. The Montana also has dense bow batteries of missile launchers.
Not to be outdone by the Jackson's troop capacity, the Montana delivers a company of battle armor company of battle armor (60 troopers, 5 per squad, plus 40 support personnel) to areas in need of liberation, rescue, or other American interventions. Another battalion of conventional infantry can supplement this groundside firepower. The Montana carries no less than 36 autonomous kill vehicles (fighters based on small craft) - 3 times that of the Jackson - and 12 shuttles to support its troops (erm...the same as the Jackson.)
The Montana class was easily the most powerful class of warships in human space for a good 40 years, at least until dethroned by another USN SDV class in the 2120s.
==Battle History:== The Montanas' battles were mostly in the form of orbital bombardments of ground positions in support of their own marines or even Army units (for brief moments at the end of the Helium War.) Throughout most of their operational life, the Montanas' marines killed more "bad guys" than the Montanas' own guns.
At the beginning of the Helium War, the Jackson-class vessel, the "J. Glenn," singlehandedly defeated four Chinese "battle barges," embarassing the US Navy into swift action. The Montanas and most other USN warships were recalled from the colonies to launch a massive assault on Saturn, where most of the PRC fleet was. Before the Helium War, most observers had expected a drawn out series of skirmishes among mankind's interstellar colonies. The USN proved them wrong.
In a week, Saturnian space had been stripped of Chinese warships, AKVs, and even civilian ships by the guns of the USN. With the guns of the US Navy over them, the US Marines on Titan rallied and captured the Chinese Titanian facilities. In this period, three Montanas claimed AKV kills.
One - just one - Montana actually engaged enemy warships. This was the first of the class, the Montana herself. In a battle at the fringes of Saturn's atmosphere, the Montana did to two Chinese "battle barges" what four of them had attempted to do to the J. Glenn: the Montana ambushed them. In one minute, the Montana (and her pre-deployed AKVs) blew apart both PRC Navy ships. This was the first and last time a Montana engaged a warship throughout the 45-year operational history of the ships.
==Variants:== SDV-15 and SDV-16 (the Alaska and Hawaii) were the last of the Montana series and varied slightly from their ten siblings. Their stern chaser neutron beam mounts were reversed to fire forward for even additional anti-shipping firepower. However, the long anticipated Last Battle with hidden Chinese warship reserves they were designed for never manifested. When the Helium War ended, it turned out the reserves had never existed.
==Notable Vessels & Crews:== In the opinion of the USN and US public, ALL Montanas are noteworthy vessels. For 45 years, they were the biggest, baddest ships in space (not counting NASA's disappeared Cygnus, which was exactly 10 times larger). When a Montana's guns bellowed, someone was catching hell, and Americans cheered them on.
==Deployment== An even dozen Montanas were built between 2072 and 2079 (about one third as many as the Jacksons). The Montanas only saw very limited combat, being at the heart of protected task forces. During the Helium War, the Montanas were primarily tasked with guarding Saturnian helium-3 mining operations and convoys. Later, they mostly "showed the flag" and blew up guerilla hideouts on colonial planets.

The background for the Montana SDV and Jackson troop transport can be found here, as Word files. Both are rather sizable - 20 and 40 pages. If you ever wanted to play Colonial Marines dropping from orbit to save colonists from bugs, bandits, or guerillas, this is the setting for you. It has no relation to the canon BT setting, rather borrowing some concepts like mechs, battle armor, and ship construction rules.

Some folks were interested enough in the BT:2100 setting to start a website and try to do some on-line roleplaying in it. http://www.btechunits.com/SMF/index.php
