==Overview:==
The Rasalhague-class fighter carrier is the Andurien Republic's answer to the
Marian Empire's Gladius-class Battle Carrier. The differences between the two
classes tell a great deal about the differing approaches to naval combat of
the two powers.
.
The Andurien carrier is viewed as a support vessel intended to deliver attacks
against ground targets, which the Andurien Republic attacks with less
frequency than the expansionist Empire. While the Marian Empire view fighters
as an integral part of "power projection" (intimidating non-spacefaring
planets near the Empire), the Andurien Republic has a broader view and plans
to fight spacefaring, even starfaring nations, and thinks in terms of the
Jihad and Clan War. To the Republic, fighters are a secondary unit that are
for supporting rarely-deployed ground troops and providing point-defence to
large spacecraft. Accordingly, the Empire has made its primary warships
fighter carriers. The Republic relegates fighters to dropships that may be
attached to warships.
.
After all, to the Republic, the primary killing is done by nuclear-armed
warships and smallcraft. Aerospace fighters are just versatile bomb trucks to
back up ground pounders.
.
The Rasalhagues are named for the great Clan War naval battle at Rasalhague
("Second Rasalhague," to military historians). It was here that the first
"Home Clan" reinforcements for the "Invading Clans" learned firsthand of the
honorless means by which the inhabitants of the Inner Sphere fought. The fresh
Andurien fleet, drawn into the Clan War by claims that the "Clans" sought to
conquer the whole Inner Sphere, brought a flood of aerospace fighters to
baptize the Clan reinforcements in nuclear fire. This and several other
mid-war Inner Sphere victories were later overshadowed by Clan successes,
particularly as Clan warships repeatedly overran the fragile dropship carriers
and standard jumpship transports of the international fleet opposing them.
Arguably, the Clans came out the victor of the Clan War. However, their last
fleet disappeared (the popular theory being that it was destroyed by Solarian
super weapons) and the remainder of the international fleet left for the Clan
home worlds on an avowed genocidal mission, never to return. Of course, after
115 years, the Clans have not returned either, so the Andurien Republic feels
it won the Clan War, and thus the (Second Battle of) Rasalhague is a fit name
for its fighter carriers.
.
.
.
==Capabilities:==
The Rasalhagues, though expensive for dropships, are relatively easy to
assemble in on-planet shipyards compared to warships. The Andurien Republic
thus fields an even twenty of the carriers, to be deployed to trouble spots as
needed.
.
The striking arm of a Rasalhague is its 9 fighter squadrons. These allow it to
deliver a calculated measure of severe bombing smackdown and excessive
strafing pain. Thus far, this has only been turned on the unruly primitive
militias of nearby worlds, often pre-gunpowder mobs.
.
The Rasalhagues also carry a squadron of utility small craft, and a company of
Marines for supplementary ground attacks. Thus far, the Marines have been
deployed in minor rescue operations to help Andurien citizens held hostage by
primitive locals or endangered by local rebellions.
.
Unlike the capital laser-armed Gladius warships, the Rasalhagues have minimal
weaponry. They emphasize point defense to destroy stray nuclear-armed fighters
and nuclear missiles. The Rasalhagues expect to be defended from serious
threats by the warships that brought them into battle, which carry
nuclear-tipped capital missiles and nuclear-armed long-ranged small craft.
Further, orbital bombardment duties can be provided by the same escorting
warships.
.
The Andurien experience in the Comstar Jihad and Clan War also show up
strongly in the high acceleration of the dropship. It is capable of 4.5G's,
hopefully enough to outpace nuclear-armed fighters, small craft, and
warships.
.
The Rasalhagues have a huge crew, designed to provide an excess of maintenance
and fighter support. They likewise have a large cargo capacity (for a war
craft) to keep their fighters well armed and fueled throughout a deployment.
.
==Variants:==
The hull of the Rasalhague is shared by the rare Luthien-class missile
carrier, a dropship meant to bolster a warship's missile "throw weight" with a
few, dense salvos. Only 4 Luthiens have been built and are viewed as dubious
idea at best.
.
==Deployment==
The Andurien Republic currently fields 20 Rasalhagues. All are currently
stationed at major fleet bases within the Republic awaiting a deployment call.
At the bases, the Republic does not stint on training funds and keeps the
dropships and their fighters well-occupied with training flights. Except for
occasional civilian rescue missions and flag-flying efforts, these support
vessels are rarely deployed abroad.

Well it's got decent anti-fighter weapons and a nice number of fighters.

The Fluff is good. Could I get a copy of the HMAero file if it's possible?
