Overview: Coustilliers were in late medieval times, auxiliary cavalry supporting the heavily armoured knights. The Coustillier is a support mech for assault mechs with increased mobility and special weaponry designed to trap and inhibit the enemy, making them easier targets for the assault mechs.
Capabilities: Equipped with a 375 XL engine, TSM, a Supercharger and jump jets, the Coustillier can outrun many medium mechs in short bursts.
The armament is designed to knock out, raise the heat and block the advanced electronics of enemy mechs, using an Angel ECM, a Plasma Rifle and a TSEMP. Defensive weaponry includes an ER Medium Laser, Small Laser and a Hatchet, enough to dissuade enemy mechs from getting too close.
13 tons of standard armour give adequate protection for its intended purpose.
Observers have raised concerns that the design lacks firepower and is very vulnerable to long range attacks, but Randam Mechwerks posits that the Coustillier is designed to operate alongside other mechs and is not designed for "Lone Wolf" actions adding that a skilled pilot could probably do some serious damage to an unwary opponent, even with the advantage of range.
Battle History: The Coustillier was originally designed for the Republic, but was rejected in favour of a still unseen Mech built on Terra. Offered on the open market the Coustillier received a lukewarm welcome until it was seen in action with other mechs.
In an engagement between a Jade Falcon Star and a lance of Assault mechs, the Coustillier allowed a Devastator, Fafnir, Hauptmann and an Atlas II to take on a pair of Night Gyrs, a Loki, a Thor and a Gyrfalcon. The fight was brutal with the Falcons using their firepower and better range to inflict damage, but when the Gyrfalcon was shut down by a TSEMP strike and the Loki finding itself overheating by the Coustillier suddenly surging forward at blinding speed, the assault mechs rushed forwards to close in for the kill. The Gyrfalcon was trying to restart when it found itself staring down the barrels of the Fafnir and was destroyed with one well-aimed salvo.
The Coustillier took some damage from the remaining Falcons, but it was able to seriously damage the Thor, destroying the PPC in its arm with a well-placed hatchet blow before retiring behind the assault mech screen. The Falcons managed to destroy the Devastator, but the Atlas II finished off the Thor, while the Fafnir got up close with the Loki and hammered it.
The Coustillier was able to EMP a Night Gyr and started to smash at it with its hatchet, an assist salvo from the Hauptmann devastated the Night Gyr, but not before the Hauptmann's right leg was destroyed by the other Night Gyr. The Coustillier turned on the remaining Night Gyr and though it suffered heavy damage, including two cockpit hits, it was able to keep the mech busy long enough for the remaining assault mechs to come to the rescue and finish off the last remaining Night Gyr.
Given the relative novelty of the Coustillier and the open terrain advantaging the Jade Falcons, the cost of one lost mech and one crippled was considered better than expected. This engagement convinced the Lyran Commonwealth to pick up the design and attach dedicated lances to assault battalions. The other Inner Sphere powers have responded with less enthusiasm, but have picked up some numbers for trials.
Deployment: House Steiner is the main customer for the Coustillier, followed by Davion and Kurita. The Capellans have shown little or no interest in the design.
Variants: One variant drops the Angel ECM for a regular GECM and removes the Small Laser to add a C3 slave, allowing the mech to share targeting telemetry when in close proximity with the enemy, allowing long range support mechs to hammer away at the enemy.
The option to swap the Medium Laser for a TAG is also being explored.
