Four manticores don't need TACs to take out Centurions. That's the point. Each can throw 20 damage downrange every turn. IF they lose a bit of mobility before that, who cares. They have more range than the Centurions anyway.

The comparison of vehicles verse mechs with like weapons and saying the costs are out of proportion has a few issues as well.
One thing that may be missing is the fact you are more likely to buy tanks to defend worlds since they are supposed to be cheap and easy to get.

They are limited to terrain as well as what they can and can't do verses a mech. And this is where the mechs have the huge advantage. From what I have read, most concentrate on weapons verses weapons and armor verses armor when comparing mech to vehicles. This is where the advantages of a mech comes into effect making it worth more then vehicles.
A mech can go into forests of all types, walk thru water as well as go under the surface, climb mountains, though the equipment needed hasn't been pushed. (Novels and adventure packs have said things about the equipment.)
Those with hands can not only punch units in combat, but can pick up things without needing a lengthy stop to set up nets to drag the items. To make a physical attack, a vehicle needs to charge, which means no weapons fire, yet a mech can kick and fire any weapons not in the legs.
And the use of jump jets gives them even more of a major advantage over vehicles. This is not including the crit issues.

So suggesting it is horrible that an 85 ton 3/5 strurmfeur is close to an 70 ton 4/6 archer with 4 lasers to back up the 20 packs in combat is a little slanted.
The Po/urbanmech comparison is much closer, though you are talking 60 ton tank verses 30 ton mech.

Now why cost is an issue to people that appear to never take that into account sounds weird, the fact that you are trying to protect a planet, means cheap effective units. Only the better worlds should be using the better tanks. For backwater worlds, vedettes are more likely then an ontos. When you compare the non canon designs, is when you really start asking things like why the tanks should cost less.

My main emphasis was on ICE. With them being cheaper, those that deal with money, may be more inclined to use them.

And one thing you need to remember with vehicles, One engine hit removes all power from the unit. Not 3 like mechs.
