This thread is intended to help organize custom armor types so that they are easier to find, and also to help other people get new ideas (or even to just have new armor types to play with). Here are some examples of what you might see.

Endo HarJel:
Endo HarJel is an experimental type of armor based on Ferro Fibrous technology, with the composition altered to use an Endo Steel plate instead of an ordinary Foamed Aluminum panel, the diamond fibers replaced with myomer bundles, small vacuoles in the armor containing HarJel, and finally a flexible polymer coating in between the different armor layers and on the very surface. It is slightly bulkier than conventional Ferro Fibrous armor (about 30% bulkier), and also providing 15% less protection per ton (somewhere in between Ferro Fibrous and Standard Armor), but it eliminates the need to install a separate HarJel system to contain hull breaches, and in fact the armor will even harden underwater; if a location protected by this armor type is submerged for at least 10 seconds, then the armor in that location will gain the combined benefits of both Impact Resistant armor and Hardened Armor. These benefits will be lost 10 seconds after exiting the water.

Ferro Myomer:
Ferro Myomer armor is based loosely on Ferro Fibrous armor technology, but it is roughly twice as bulky (give or take a couple slots) due to the inclusion of Triple Strength Myomers in its construction. For every 3 points of the mech's current overheat value (or fraction thereof), the mech will gain a cumulative 5% damage resistance to all forms of kinetic damage (including 2.5% damage resistance against PPCs, and increased resilience against critical hits).

Spalling Reduction Armor:
This armor type will occupy a minimum of 6 additional critical slots, plus any remaining critical spaces that are otherwise unused. However, these critical spaces are not simply wasted; whenever a space occupied by Spalling Reduction Armor receives a critical hit, a reroll does not occur, and instead that critical space is actually destroyed, thereby reducing the risk of other items in the mech being destroyed. Spalling Reduction Armor can be combined with any armor type that normally does not occupy critical slots, as long as at least 6 unused spaces are available.

Displacement Armor:
This type of armor occupies additional critical slots, similar to Ferro Fibrous armor, without increasing the Protection Per Ton. However, it also enables a mech to move completely unhindered in water, with an Underwater MP equal to half its Walk MP (rounded up) + the Underwater MP already provided by any installed Underwater Maneuvering Units. In addition, Water hexes of Depth 1 are treated as Clear Terrain, and the mech receives a cumulative –1 to all piloting rolls (and ranged attacks against the mech receive a cumulative +1) for every two levels of Water depth.

An unusual side effect of the fabrication process for Displacement Armor is that the special coating is a very deep purple color. Many engineers using Displacement Armor also tend to feature blue lights in their designs, though this has no effect on system performance and seems to be entirely for aesthetic purposes.

Thermoelectric Armor:
This armor type includes thermoelectric plates in its construction. It occupies additional critical slots and has 25% less Protection Per Ton, but for every five points of armor (or fraction thereof) remaining on the mech, its total Heat Dissipation increases by 15% (rounded up, to a maximum of 75%).

Fog Armor:
This special armor type occupies additional critical slots and reduces the protection per ton, but every time the mech takes damage it releases a small cloud of smoke, providing limited cover to assist in quick getaways, stealth tactics (some users will deliberately damage their own mechs to release smoke), and combined arms operations.

Faraday Armor:
This special type of armor will provide the mech with increased protection from incoming ECM and from Electromagnetic Pulse. It also has the side effect of enabling Power Armor, Exoskeletons and ProtoMechs to attach without needing to carry their own magnetic clamping systems.

Hardened Ferro Fibrous:
A very simple design, Hardened Ferro Fibrous armor combines both the strengths and the weaknesses of Hardened Armor with an increase in bulk, giving it half the Protection Per Ton of Ferro Fibrous Armor. The end result is still heavier than Standard Armor, but also lighter than older versions of Hardened Armor.

Hardened Industrial:
A cheaper and simpler to fabricate version of Hardened Armor, intended for Industrial Mechs and RetroTech units. It has only half the Protection Per Ton of Industrial/Primitive Armor, or two thirds the Protection Per Ton of conventional Hardened Armor, but it is otherwise indistinguishable from Hardened Armor in its basic function.

Industrial Ferro Aluminum:
A cheaper and simpler to fabricate version of Ferro Fibrous and Ferro Aluminum armor, intended primarily for Industrial applications. It is precisely what it sounds like; it offers less protection per thousand kilograms than its military-grade namesake, but is cheaper than Military-grade Standard Armor and provides more protection than conventional Industrial-grade armor... At the expense of an increase in bulk.

Plot Armor:
Only available for use in extended campaigns, and requiring the express consent of all involved players and/or GMs, Plot Armor provides hidden benefits (and drawbacks) as the situation demands, but otherwise resembles and functions as Standard Armor. At any point, the GM (or other players, by majority vote) can revoke this type of armor and replace it with Standard Armor as if nothing happened.

Aside from the prerequisite that the protected unit is important to the plot... Plot Armor has no unit restrictions, though any unit that carries it will gain the Illegal design quirk.

If you like or dislike any of these armor types, have suggestions on how to improve on them, or have your own ideas for custom armor types (and/or designs using them), go ahead and share your thoughts!

I really need more time in the day and post some of the crazy stuff I came up with...
