After reading the various books, I have a few unanswered questions regarding Armored Components.

1: Can individual Heat Sinks be made into Armored Components?
2: Can RISC Supercooled Myomers (since they can be damaged if their spaces are hit) be made into Armored Components?
>> 2a: If yes to the above, does the component armor count separately for each location for the purposes of determining the effects of critical damage, or is it still counted as all one component?
3: When making a Laser into an Armored Component, and also fitting it with a Laser Insulator, then is the Laser Insulator also required to be an Armored Component as if it were part of the laser, or is it treated separately?
>> 3a: If the latter, then can a Laser Insulator be destroyed by a critical hit without damaging the laser itself?
>> 3b: If you use a Laser Insulator on an Armored Laser, then does the component armor protect it from the effects of a single malfunction, or does the malfunction destroy the weapon as if it were unarmored?
4: If you make a Caseless Autocannon, RISC Hyper Laser, a normal or ER Laser equipped with a RISC Laser Pulse Module, Blue Shield Particle Field Dampener, or any other weapon/component that has a chance to receive a Critical Hit during normal operation into an Armored Component, then does the component armor protect it from Critical Hits caused by a malfunction as well as from incoming fire, or just from incoming fire?
5: If you make a pair of Compact Heat Sinks (which share a single critical space) into an Armored Component, then does it count as one critical space, or as two, for the purposes of extra weight?
6: Can one-shot weapons, such as Rocket Launchers, be made into Armored Components?
7: Should Anti-Spalling Buffers, which serve precisely no function besides filling up unused space in a mech to soak up critical hits (0.25 tons for 1 to 4 spaces), be permitted for turning into Armored versions?
8: Can extended fuel tanks, extended fuel cells, Coolant Pods and HarJel pods be made into Armored Components?

Can I suggest you have a look at the Sarna Wiki Page - Armored Components - it also has links to other pages.

Though from what it discusses there mostly everything (there is an exception) can have an armoured component attached, if it has a critical slot. So if it has 4 critical slots - extra 2 tons.

I guess it comes down to the big three again speed-firepower-armour and how you modify these in determining an optimal mix. Though a fourth could be sensory computer equipment must also be considered. As Armour increases weight for weapons decreases. (Cost increase!!!)

Though if you are in the games on Solarias VII or you customise all your 'Mechs (and have the money) or House Unit One off for commander / special elite pilots - would you convert an entire production run? the excess cost could mean reducing your sales as you competitors have a more cost effective design compared to a high initial cost - increased survivability in battle design - I guess it comes down to how much disposable income you have allocated to purchase a new 'Mech.

(should this post have been under the design tab?)

This information I am asking about is not covered in the books, nor is it covered on the wiki page.

Almost any component can be armored on a BattleMech (but not a Superheavy one) if it can normally be critically hit although there are some exceptions like ammunition. Each slot on the critical hit table costs a half a ton (except cockpit which costs a ton) to be armored and I don't think you can partially armor a particular component (like 3 slots of a 6 slot engine). Armoring a particular component only protects that component against critical hits as the result of damage like from enemy fire or physical attacks and not because of equipment malfunction/failure. Hope this helps.
